To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK 'I. KEEFE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar- Alarms, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to burglar alarms, and the object thereof is to provide an im proved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is designed to be automatically operated by the opening of a door; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device or apparatus of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a transverse section of one side of a door frame and of a part of a door hinged thereto, and showing a part of my improved burglar alarm apparatus; Fig. 2 a side view of a casing which forms a part of the apparatus with one side removed and part of the construction in section and showing mechanism therein forming part of the apparatus; Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the parts in a different position and showing an ordinary electric alarm device in connection with the mechanism in the casing; Fig. 4 a sectional detail of a part of the apparatus detached from the side frame of the door; Figs. 5, 6 and 7 perspective views of details of the apparatus; and, Fig. 8 a view similar to Fig. t but showing a modification.
In Fig. l of the accompanying drawing, I have shown at a one side of the frame of a door and at a a part of a door hinged thereto and, in the construction shown, the side of the door frame is box-shaped in form. In the practice of my invention, I provide a casing 19 having a face plate 6 and in practice, this casing is countersunk into the door frame so that the face plate 12 thereof will be flush with the face of the door frame adj acent to the door when the latter is closed. Vithin the casing b is a bolt 6 movable through a keeper 6 and provided with a head movable through the face plate 6 of the casing, and between the head 6 of said bolt and the keeper b is a spiral spring 5 which normally serves to force said bolt or the head thereof outwardly as shown in Fig. 3.
Pivoted to the inner end of the bolt 6 is a dog a, the end of which is provided with a nose 0 in the bottom of which is a recess 0 and the bottom edge of the dog 0 is segmentally curved and the end of said dog below the nose 0 is also segmentally curved and provided with a depending arm 0 at the base of which and on the inner side of which is a recess 0 Pivoted above the inner end of the dog 0 at c is a lever d, the lower end of which is provided with apin d adapted to operate in the recess 0 in the bottom of the nose 0 of the dog 0, and the upper end of which is provided with a pin or projection d and in the top wall of the casing b adjacent to the lever d are two binding posts d and d with the inner ends of which are connected spring contact devices d and (Z with the latter of which the pin or projection of the lever d is adapted to operate, and secured in the casing 11 is a stop (Z which limits the movement of one end of the lever 03 toward the face plate 6 of the casing b.
Secured in the outer wall of the door frame a is an ordinary Yale lock 6, and se cured to the inner wall of said frame is a cap plate f, and the Yale lock 6 is secured in position by a bolt 9 passed through the door frame and provided at its inner end with a nut g concealed by the cap plate The lower inner corner of the casing b is cut away to form a recess 5 and the bolt 9 passes through this recess. Secured to the cylinder 6 of the lock is a shaft h which passesinto the casing b, the opposite side walls of which are indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4, and said shaft is provided within said casing with a collar if having an angular finger 71, and mounted on said shaft within the casing b is an arm 71 shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, and in detail in Fig. 6, and said arm is provided with a head i and the collar k is provided with a sleeve 71, which also passes through the head i of the arm 2', and the arm 2' is free to turn on the sleeve ]L3 of the collar h, but said collar is rigidly connected with said shaft h.
' In practice, the shaft h is turned as here inafter described by means of the key 6 of the lock 6, and passing through the inner wall of the door frame is a shaft j similar to the shaft it but shorter, and which also passes into the casing b and is provided a its inner end with a collar j having an angular finger j similar to the finger h and adapted to operate around the finger 71 and also to operate the arm 2', and connected with the outer end of the shaft it is a knob or handle member by which said shaft may be operated, and wound on the shaft j is a spring one end of which is secured in the door frame and the other to the head j of r the knob or handle member j and the object of the spring is to hold the shaft j in its normal position.
The arm 2' is provided at its end with a laterally directed finger 2' and the arm 0 of the dog 0 with a laterally directed nose 0 and there is a stop itin the bottom part of the casing 7) to limit the movement of the parts j and h in one direction.
In practice, I also provide an ordinary electric alarm device which may be located at any desired point within the house, and connected therewith are electric wires 70 and is which are connected with the binding posts (P and (Z and one of the said wires, the wire it as shown in the drawing, is provided with a switch 70".
In Fig. l of the drawing the door a is shown in a closed position in full lines and indicated in an open position in dotted lines, and in Fig. of the drawing, the parts of the apparatus within the casing b are shown in the position they assume when the door is closed. With the parts in this position the circuit of which the wires 76 and 70* form a part is open, and said parts are held in this position by the door itself, the bolt 6" being forced inwardly by said door as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. If now the door be opened by a burglar, or anyone else, the bolt 0* will be forced outwardly by the spring 7) as shown in Fig. 3, and the lever (Z will be thrown in the position also shown in said figure in which operation the nose or projection (Z thereon will strike the spring contact device (Z and force it into engagement with the contact device cl and the circuit will be completed through the wires in and r and the alarm device 7% will be operated.
The alarm will continue to operate until the door is again closed, or until one of the shafts h or j is operated. The shaft It may be operated by the key 6 of the lock 6, and, in this event, the angular finger in on the shaft It will throw the arm 2' into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8, and the dog 0 will also be thrown into the position shown in dotted lines in said figure, and in this operation the arm 2' only operates on the end of the arm a or the nose 0 thereof. In this position of the dog 0 the spring contact device (Z the end of which is curved downwardly forces the lever (Z into the position shown in dotted lines in said figure and the end of the nose 0 of the dog 0 drops forward of the pin (5 at the end of said lever when the shaft has been returned to its normal position in order to remove the key from the cylimler of the lock, and in this position of the operative parts of the mechanism within the casing Z) if the door a be closed the various parts in said casing will again be forced into the position shown in Fig. 2 and the parts of the apparatus are in position to be operated on the opening of the door to again sound the alarm.
During the day when the sounding of the alarm is not desired the switch 7: thrown out. And at night when an occupant of the house wishes to go out and return without operating the alarm device and without going to the trouble to throw the switch, he may operate the shaft from the inside, throwing the arm 2' into contact with the curved under edge of the dog (1, raising said dog until the finger or projection 2'" enters the recess 0" as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The arm 2' as stated is loosely mounted on the sleeve 72- of the collar 71, and the said arm remains in the recess 0 while the angular finger j is returned to its normal position against the stop 7 1, by the spring j. As the occupant of the house opens the door to go out the nose 0 of the dog 0 passes over the pin (Z and does not operate the lever (Z to close the circuit, and after the occupant has closed the door it is necessary for him to insert his key into the cylinder of the lock e, and operate the shaft /e, so as to again raise the arm 2' and dog 0, said dog being held up until the door is again opened by the returning occupant when the nose 0 of the dog 0 will pass over the pin (Z and the upper end of the arm 2 will be drawn forward and as it leaves the recess will drop into its normal position on the angular fingers 71. and j. lVhen the occupant coming in again closes the door the parts are forced into the position shown in Fig. :2, and should any body open the door an alarm will be sounded.
lVith this construction it will be seen that anyone desiring to leave the house temporarily may set the alarm device so that it will not be operated when he returns, and while I have shown, in Fig. 41-, a shaft composed of two parts la. and j for accon'lplislr ing this and other results, the same results may be accomplished by the construction shown in Fig. 8, in which I employ a single shaft 972- provided with a rigid collar m having an angular finger m which will operate the arm 2', which arm, in practice, is mounted on a sleeve or extension m of said collar. In this form of construction a sleeve a is cured to the cylinder 6 of the lock 6, and the shaft m is provided with an extension m which enters said sleeve n and is adapted to rotate therein, and said sleeve is provided near its inner end with a transverse recess M, and the extension m of the shaft m with a pin m movable in said recess, and wound on the shaft m or the extension m thereof, is a spiral spring 0 one end of which is connected with the sleeve n and the other with said shaft.
The knob or handle j is connected with one end of the shaft f by means of which said shaft may be operated from within the building or from the inner side of the door, and the sleeve n which is connected with the cylinder 0 of the lock is operated by the key 6 from the outer side of the building or door as with the construction shown in Fig. 4, and the manipulation of the parts of the apparatus within the casing 72 with this form of construction will be the same as with that shown in said figure.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a burglar alarm device, the combination with a door frame and door hinged thereto, of a casing set into the frame and provided with a spring operated bolt adapted to be forced inwardly when the door is closed and outwardly when the door is opened, an electric alarm device, contact devices within said casing, wires connecting said alarm device with said contact devices, devices in operative connection with said bolt and adapted to close an open circuit through said wires. when said bolt is forced inwardly, comprising a dog pivoted to said shaft, a lever adapted to be operated by said dog and to throw said contact devices into connection, a shaft passing through said frame and through said casing and provided with means for throwing said dog into and out of connection with said lever, and means for operating said shaft from either end thereof.
2. In a burglar alarm device, the combination with a door frame and door hinged thereto, of a casing set into said frame and provided with a spring operated bolt adapted to be forced inwardly when the door is closed and outwardly when the door is opened, an electric alarm device, electric contact devices within said casing, wires connecting said alarm device with said contact devices, a lever adapted to throw said contact devices into connection, a dog pivoted to said bolt and adapted to operate said lever, a shaft passing through the frame, means for operating said shaft from either end thereof, an arm loosely mounted on said shaft and adapted to operate said dog to throw it into and out of engagement with said lever, and means connected with said shaft to operate said arm.
3. In a burglar alarm device, a door frame, a door hinged thereto, a casing set into the frame, a spring operated bolt mounted in said casing and adapted to be forced inwardly when the door is closed and outwardly when the door is opened, electric contact devices within said casing, an alarm device in electric connection with said contact devices, a lever mounted in said casing and adapted to force said contact devices into connection, a dog pivoted to said bolt and adapted to operate said lever, a shaft passing through said frame and through said casing and composed of separate parts one of which is adapted to be operated from the inside of the door and the other from the outside thereof, an arm rotatably mounted on one part of said shaft and adapted to operate said dog so as to throw it out of connection with said lever, and devices connected with both parts of said shaft for operating said arm.

In a burglar alarm device, a door frame, a door hinged thereto, a casing secured in the door frame and provided with a spring operated bolt adapted to be forced inwardly when the door is closed and outwardly when the door is opened, an electric alarm device, contact devices within said casing and in electrical connection with said alarm device, a lever pivoted in said casing and adapted in one position to throw said contact devices into connection, a dog pivoted to said bolt and adapted to operate said lever in one direction, a Yale lock secured in the door frame on the outside of the door, a shaft connected with the cylinder of said lock and passing through the door frame and through said casing, devices connected with said shaft for operating said dog so as to throw it out of connection with said lever, and devices on the inner side of the door frame for operating said shaft, said shaft being also adapted 1t01be operated by a key inserted into said In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 17th day of January 1908.
