7 a) I ATTORNEYS JOHN SARGH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TROUSERS-EXPANDEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1909.
' Application filed. July a1, 1903. Serial No. 446,277.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SARGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Trouser-Ex pander, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to trouser expanders, such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 87 3,61 6, granted to me December 10, 1907.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved trouser expander, for holding the trousers expanded at the inner sides of the limbs of the wearer, to hide the bow-legged formation of the said limbs, the expander being actuated in a very simple manner from the crotch of the trousers when the wearer is in an erect position, and the expander collapsing and thus reducing the strain on the expander and the wearer when the latter is in a sitting position.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement as applied; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the improvement.
The leggings A are attached to the lower limbs of the wearer, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1, and on the inner or opposite faces of the said leggings A are arranged expanding members B, B connected with each other by connections C, consisting preferably of elastic bands D attached to the expanding members B and connected at their upper ends by swivels E with the ends of a tape F extending over the crotch G of the trousers G, as shown in Fig. 1.
The leggings A are of any approved construction and are provided at their lower ends with foot straps A to hold the leggings against upward movement on the legs of the wearer.
Each expanding member B is preferably of the construction shown and described in the Letters Patent above referred to, so that further detailed description of the same is not deemed necessary, it being understood,
however, that each expanding member is provided with upper and lower curved bars B, B hinged at their ends on the outside of the corresponding legging A, and the said bars B, B are pivotally connected with each other at or near their middle by a link B and to the upper bar'B are buttoned or otherwise secured elastic bands H extending over the lower bar B and connected at their lower ends by buckles H to the legging A.
The elastic bands D are buttoned or otherwise secured to loops B, formed on the upper bar B directly opposite the upper ends of the elastic bands H, and the elastic bands D extend upward in the trouser legs and form the expanding members for the trousers at the upper parts of the legs, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. It is understood that as the elastic bands D extend from the expanding members B to the tape F held at the crotch G, they tend to hold the inner portion of the legs of the trousers at the upper limbs in an inward position, thus causing the trouser legs to be expanded along the inner sides from the lower ends to the crotch, and completely hide the bow-legged formation of the Wearers legs. The upper ends of the elastic bands D are adjusted by suitable buckles D, to' lengthen or shorten the said bands, with a view to brin the tape F in proper relation to the crotch CT. Thus when the wearer is in an erect position, as shown in Fig. 1, an up ward pull is exerted on the expanding members B, so as to swing the same into an extended position, as indicated in Fig. 1, the connection C being wholly supported from the crotch G of the trousers. When the wearer is seated then the connection 0 is relaxed, thereby allowing the elastic bands H to bring the expanding members B into a closed position, that is, folded against the leggings A; at the same time the elastic bands D are relieved of tension, so as to give the desired comfort to the wearer when in a sitting position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A trouser expander, comprising expanding members for attachment to the limbs at the inner sides thereof, each member having a s ring pressed swinging frame, springs norma ly retaining the frames in inoperative position, a pair of elastic bands connecting with each frame, and adapted to extend upwardly inside the trouser leg, a tape, and
swivel joints connecting the ends of the tape with the ends of the adjacent set o'fcbands..
2. A trouser expander, comprising expanding members for attachment to theclim'bszofia the wearer at the inner sides thereof, each 3. A trouserlexp'ander, comprising expand-- iirg'memb'ers' for attachment: to' the limbs of: the wearer at the iIIIIGI Si'ClGS there0f; each member having a spring-pressed swin frameyadpstable elastic bands connecte with the said swing frame, a tape, and swiv- 15 elssconn'ecting the said tape with the said elastic bands.
In-.:testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN SARGH.
