Description
. character for removing or turning nuts or UNITED STATES rAfrENT OFFICE.
ROBERT WILLIAM JONES, OF LONDON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO M. F. DUNN, OF LONDON, OHIO.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 11. 1908. Serial No. 437,981.
No. 908,677. Patented Jan. 5, 1909.
To all whom it may concern: l. ber 1 is formed with a socket 6 preferably Be it known that I, ROBERT WILIJAM tapering somewhat inwardly with its inner JONES, a citlzen of the United States, residi end of more acute meeting incllned walls ing at London, in the county of Madison and 1 than are its opposed walls, as at 7, said socket State of Ohio, have invented certain new and i having inwar ly extendin contracted poruseful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do tions 8, the purpose of whic will be apparent declare the following to be a full, clear, andl later. exact description of the invention, such as i The handle member 3 which is preferably will enable others skilled in the art to which of any required length for convenience for it appertains to make and use the same. grasplng, has its inner portion provided with i y invention relates to improvements in slightly inwardly inclined lateral ed es which wrenches. conform to the corresponding wal s of the It has for its object to provide a simple, Socket of the member 1 and the intermediate inexpensive and efiective contrivance of this portion of its extreme inner end recessed or cut out as at 9 to conform to and receive the bolts and for manipulating pi es or other cylindric objects in a ready an expeditious manner.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arran ement of parts, as will be more why descri ed and particularly pointed out in the ap ended claims.
11 the drawings illustrating the preferred form of my invention :Figure 1 is aside elel vation thereof; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the handle member removed a short distance from the member equipped with jaws, a portion of the device being removed to disclose more especially the interior of the handle-receiving socket in the member provided with jaws; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the wrench taken on line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a modification thereof with the parts adapted more particularly for use as a pipe wrench.
In practicing my invention I provide a member or part 1 equipped with jaws 2 and the handle member 3 adapted for suitable attachment to the first referred to member and its ready removal therefrom as in efiecting ready conversion of the device from a nut or bolt wrench into a pi e wrench or for application to other cylindrical objects where its use may be required.
The member 1 which is preferabl of general rectangular outline, but slight y tapering in longitudinal direction, has its jaws 2, which are arallel for the greater portion of their lengt s upon op osite surfaces, formed with inclined or angu ar surfaces 5 inwardly from their parallel o posed faces in order to accommodate the di erent outlines of diflerent shaped nuts or bolt heads. Said memhandle a so having extending beyond its tapered recess, terminals 10 to enter the corresponding portions of said socket.
It will be seen that the handle, as it is inserted in place in the member 1, will be wedged in a fixed effective position, thus dispensing with additional means for effecting that purpose and whereby the handle member may be readily removed and inserted without dis lacing other means of fastening. Also, it wil be noted that by means of this arrangement, the handle and member having the jaws for engagement with the object to be mani lated may be readily separated or disassociated as in effecting the conversion of the device according to its intended use as above described.
In the modification as designated byFig. 4, the member 11 of general outline with the member 1 has its corresponding jaw members 12.ada ted for apphcation to a pipe or other cylin rical object, the inner faces of said jaws being straight and somewhat curved respectively in order to obtain the requisite leverage upon the object or pipe manipulated.
The rectilinear or straight surface of one jaw is preferably formed with notches or serrations 13 and which surface may be formed of a piece of steel set into the respective jaw.
It will be understood that the wrench as a whole may be made of malleable metal'or steel as desired. Also, it will be noted that a very simple, inexpensive and efl'ective instrument is provided by reason of the foregoing construction and arrangement of parts for its intended purpose.
From the fore oing description taken in connection with t e accompanying drawings,
acute tapered portion of said socket, said the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended ex lanation,
Various changes in the orm, proportion and the minor details of constructlon may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of theadvantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1. A device of the character described comprising a jaw equipped meinber havin a socket therein with laterally tapering walls, said socket having at its extreme inner end contracted terminals and intermediate said terminals meeting inclined walls, their point of convergence being about central of the socket.
having a socket therein of general inwardl;
tapering contour with its inner surface formed with'nieetim inclined surfaces forming an apex central of the bottom of said socket, and a handle member having a corresponding recess at its inner end for engagement with the inner bottom surface of said socket.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT WILLIAM JONES.
