TRACE.
APPLICATION FILED HAY 29, 1908.
DANIEL MCAULAY, OF FULTON CHAIN, NEW YORK.
TRACE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1908.
Application led May 29, 1908. Serial No. 435,814.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL MOAULAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fulton Chain, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Traces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to traces and has for its object certain additions to the usual leather structure which greatly strengthens same without impairing its exibility as will be more fully described with other improvements in the following specification, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view of the improved trace. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
The trace here illustrated has the appearance of the ordinary trace and is made of several layers of leather stitched together. It may be divided into several sections 5 and 6 which are connected by the link 7 that at the same time aifords a means of support at that point of the trace from any desired source passing over the back of the horse.
Two layers of leather 8 and 9 are used in the construction of this trace and as shown in Fig. 2, may be a single strap passed around to both sides of the trace and carry between them the strap 10 of sheet metal, preferably good grade steel which easily yields and is sufliciently flexible to give the effect of the ordinary leather trace but possessing a superior degree of strength is not liable to stretch nor warp.
The rear end of the trace may be provided with an eye 11 or any other suitable attaching means with side plates 12 through which pass the rivets 13, also penetrating the steel strap and the leather and binding them all closely together.
The metal strap 10 terminates at the link 7 and a rivet 14 is used at this point to bind the metal and leather.
The forward end of section 5 carries a loop 15 to which is attached the chain 16 of the hame and the front end is reduced as at 17 to contain a single link in its horizontal position and prevent the passage of the succeeding links. Within this reduced end is a rounded wall 18 slotted to afford communication between the interior of the loop 15 and the reduced portion 17.
When it is desired to take up the chain 16 or let it out towards the hame, its horizontal link 19 is passed through the slot in the wall 18 and within the loop 15 where it may be passed on until the desired length is attained when the link at that point is put into its horizontal position and the chain put back into the reduced part.
It is obvious that other buckles or devices used about harnesses may be introduced into the trace and the parts shown and described may be modified if necessary without departing from the essential features. Strips 20 may be placed above and below the metal strap and stitched with the two side straps or the latter may be closed over the metal strap by the stitching only.
VV hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A trace comprising a plurality of leather straps, a metal strap inclosed in the same, a link interposed in the trace, an eye member at one end of said srace, a loop member at the other end, an elongated extension carried by the loop adapted to hold one link of a hame chain in a horizontal position and adapted to hold the succeeding links against movement transversely of the trace, and a wall separating the loop from the extension, and provided with a slot to permit the entrance of the chain into said loop.
In testimony whereof l, affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL MCAULAY. l/Vitnesses LAURA F. HARNEY, P. J. HARNEY.
