Description
@mnt @line I. C, PENNINGTON, OF PATERSON, JERSEY.
Lam Para; No. 90,778, zum .rune 1,1869.
, IIPROVEili/ IEIN'T` IN STEAM-GENERATOR FURNACES.
The Schedule referred to in theseLetter Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it mayconcem Be it known that I, I. C. PENNINGTON, of Paterson, in theeounty of' Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented a newiand useful Improvement in Boilers and Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference -being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- .Figure 1 is'a vertical cross-section of a boiler 4with which my improvement has been connected, taken through the line a: x, iig. 2.
. Figure- 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line 'y y, iig. 1.
"Similar-letters' of reference indicate corresponding parts. u
My invention has for its object to economize the use of fuel used in heating stcam-boilers, and reverberating and other furnaces, by using the heat escaping with the products of combustion, for heatingthe air, to support combustion, before it is introduced into the re-box; and
It consists in the'` peculiar arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the lire-box, which isprovided with doors, for the admission of the fuel, for the admission of the tools for stirring thel iire, and for the removal of the ashes from the ash-pit.
. B is the grate, which I prefer to make in the form of steps or shelves, and which may. be made of any suitable material.
From the fire-chamber A, the products of combustion pass through the boiler C, or over the hearth of the furnace, where they do their work, and pass thence -to the flue D, through which they pass to the chimney- The flue D is enlarged, so as to form a chamber, in which is placed a series of pipes, F, the forward ends of which are -supported by the plate G, which separates'the ilue D from the dre-chamber A. 1 The rear endsof the'pipe F are supported bythe plate H, that separates the due D from the air, `the outer ends of the pipes F thus opening into the open air, and their inner ends opening into the fire-box A.
, By this construction, as the air passes, through the pipes F, to the fire-box A, to support the combustion of the fuel, it is heated by the products-of combustion, l
which surround the said pipes, as they pass through the enlargement of the ue D, so as to. utilize the heat that may be contained in said products of combustion,
and returnv it to the-re-box A, in the heated air, thus retaining and utilizing the heat that would otherwise escape into the chimney.V
The particular form of the enlargement of the flue D, and the position of the pipes F, will depend upon' the kind and form of the boiler and furnace to whic the improvement is applied.
Having thus described my invention,
- I claim 'as new, and desire to secure by Letters` Patent- The arrangement of the air-pipes F, lsupported by the plates H G, with reference to the enlarged iiue D,
chimney-due H, boiler C, and fire-box and grate A B,
as herein set forthand shown. v
I. O; PENNINGTON.
