Letters Patent No. 79,075, dated June 23, 1868.
. IMPROVEMENT IN HOT-AIR FURNACES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. Lea and CHARLES M. Hnnnnnnnnen, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin, and State of Minnesota, have invented, a. new and useful Improvement in Furnaces; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates a new and improved method of constructing furnaces for heating dwelling houses and public buildingsby heated air, and the invention consists in the novel arrangement of fire-box, heatingdrums, and radiating-tubesand fines, as will be hereinafter, described.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the furnace, showing the fire-box and smoke-passages.
Figure 2 is a side elevation, showing one of the smoke-drums broken away,-so. as to expose the interior, giving a side' view, also, of the fire-box and the smoke-pipes.
Figure 3 is a top view, showing the position of the vertical air-tubes through the fire-drum A.

A represents the fire-drum or furnace proper, being a vertical cylinder, with vertical air-tubes passing through it, as seen in fig. 3. l

0 represents annular elliptical-shaped drums, through which the smoke and product of combustion pass.
D D represent pipe-fines, which connect the furnace proper or drum A with the drums O.
E E represent pipes or fines, which connect the back endsof the drums C with chimney F.
G represents a damper in the chimney F.
J. is the smoke-flue from chimney F. p H represents partitions in each of the drums C, which serve to retard the currents of smoke and heated gases as they pass through the drums.
1 represents the vertical air-tubes, which pass through the furnace-drum A.
The nir'enters'from below into the spaces within the, annular drums .O, and passesfrom' them upward through thevertical ai'r-tubesa in part and in contact with the heated surface of the'furnace-drnm A.
By opening the damper G, the-heat and products of combustion may pass directly into the chimney, and out through the fine J. i
By closing the damper G," the heat in the furnace will be compelled to pass between the air-tubes a, and to enter thefucl-tnbes D D, by which itis conducted into the drums O. In passing through these drums it is retarded in its course by the partition-plates H, but finally enters the tubes or fines E, by which it is conducted intothe chimney F and flue J, above the. dampcr'G. i I
The damper may be adjusted so as to suit the required temperature or thc state of the atmosphere.
The rod of the damper extends forward to the front of the furnace, and is markedf.
In front there are apertures in thodrums O, for cleaning the same, to which'suitable doors are adjusted.
In-this' example of our invention, tlic furnace is arranged for wood as fuel, but we do not confine ourselves to any particular kind of fuel, nor to any particular proportions or materials in the construction of the furnace.
Itis designed to place the furnace in a chamber of suitable size and construction, from which the heated air maybe distributed, as may be desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement'and combination of the furnace-drum A, (with thevertical air-tubes a,) the annular fine-drums C, the smoke-fiues D-and E, and the chimney flues F and J, substantially as described for the purposes set forth.
2. The partition-plates Hand damper G, in combination with the furnace-drum A, annular flue clrums O, smoke-fiues D E, and chimney-fines F J, as herein shown and described.
