TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be i't known that I, ANDREW Kronen, of the town of Monroe, in the county of Green, and State of Wis-- cons in, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating-Apparatus orStoves and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accounpanying drawings, making a part of this specification, iu'whieh- Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2, a vertical section. v
Figure 3, a vertical section at right angles with the section shown at g. 2.
Figure 4, a horizontal section,taken at c d', i
Figure 5, a horizontal section, taken at al c'' and Figure 6, ahorizontal section taken at elf of hg. 3.
The nature and object of my invention consist in constructing a stove or heater with a central iiue, passing from the ire-box up to or near the top of the same, with a descending flue ou one side, and Van ascending dueon theopposite side, so encased as to form a single air-heating chamber around vthe iiues, and also around the re-box, so that a powerful air-heater is formed; and iu arranging the side-openings at'the base, sovthat by closing the 'upper'ports' or air-registers, it can be used as a radiator; and in a novel construction of the parte, und arrangement of the same, as is hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed as new. l
- To enable others skilled in' the art to make and'use Thy improved stove or heater, I will describe its construction and operation. y I
The base-plate a is made of'east iron, and is supported by legs or supports, substantially as shown. Resting on plate a are two cylinders, or a cylinder and an Octagon, made of separate plates. The outer cylinder or octa'gon n, in the form shown, is made of vertical plates' fitting at their sides; four of them are simply ornamental, as shown at n, iig. 1,1while the other four are provided with openings o. These openings o are iliade. nearly as large as the base Aof the stove is higl1,"and are provided with a corresponding re'gister, lwhich is made of slats hinged at the sides, so'that when-allowed to fall down, they will close the openings, and areoperated byia rod attached similarly to theirods of Venetian blindso that they can be adjusted to admit any desired quantity of air, or exclude it all. The interior cylinder of the base surrounds the fire-box d and the ash-box b, which are divided from each other by the grate c. This cylinder is curved inwardsat the top, so as to contract it vabove the re, and bring the products of combustiori through a small space, and concentrate' the gases which "escape into a small gas-burner, `e, when they are consumed, as sho\vn'in,iigs. 2 and 3. This cyliuder'may be made in sections, and it`will be found convenient to make the ash-pit in one section and the Ere-.box in another. lThe ash-box is provided witli'a separate door, o', and ymay be provided with an ash-pan, if desired. The fireboxv d is provided with u. door, d', also with an air-passage, e', above the door, for the purpose of furnishing-the gus and carbon-burnerrre. witha sufficient amount of oxygen to insure the perfect combustion of the .gasesand the escaped carbon. The 'gas-burner projects down 'into the cylinder, so asto leavefan annular air-space around it in the tire-chamber. The gas-burner,e is made circular, or of suche-ther form as'may be convenient, and is provided with thin, flat plates, which may be made in concentric circles or interlaced, as desired. These hat plates soon become heated very hot, and, by the passage ofthe carbon of coals through the restricted space, it is burned with the gases, and thesmoke passes oil'l thin andA clear, making .the stovea great heater.` 'The upper portion of the stoveA is contracted, and is 'supported upon the base by the disk shown at la. It will be advisable to construct the upper` portion -ot` sheet metal, although it may be cast. The outer cylinderor casing k is made entire, and is provided inside with two semieircular4 vertical partitions, z', shown at iig. 6. These partition-s separate the smoke-passages or ilues m and 11i/l from thefcentral air-chamber o. -Just above the base, lateral lines m are made to connect the flue m with m,so tlat'at that point the interior appears in form of two cylinders, as shown at fig.4 5v, the fines being'more fully shown at tig. 2. A 'central flue,f, is placed overthe gas-burner e, and extends up to the top of-the stove, `where it connects with thebroad fide m by means of the shut-pipe or Hue f". It is provided on the top with a cap, f', fox cleaning it without removal. Caps may also. be provided for the ues m and-m, or the stovc-caplc may be so fitted as to operate as caps for them as well as for the stove. An open net-work, r, isprovided forthe top, which is neuallyv made so as to register and cut olf the passage of air, whenit is desiredlto use the stove es e radiator instead of e. heater. If desired, pipes for eonveyinghot air een be attached to the top.
`:in operation, the' fire is built atd, sind as soon ais'the fuel is well heated, the-plates in e will be heated lso Y es to consume the gases 'und st n'oke in the pipe f immediately above the burner e, the required air being furnished afte; The he'ztted produetsoi` combustion then rise and pass through fend'f into m, end down m through mfinto m, when they again rise and pass out atV pipe p, their 4course being` indicated by the black arrows.` The' piper);l is provided with a demper, and to facilitate kindlingfthe lire, pipe may bel made to connect pipep directly with ilue m at the u'pper end, by nu additional cross-pipe Aprovided with a. damper, se as to he eiectually closed es soon as the re is'stztrt'ed. The nilucharnherend passagesare'indicnted' by the lightg eoloredvpo-rtions of the drawings and the-red arrows. The air passes into vthe chamber through the registers (i,
-afnd out at 1*.` It will beseen that the air-chamber o entirely surrounds the lire-box md the central flue, so
that when used as n he'ntor, there is no loss of heat, as all of the radiation isutilized, while, hyeenfining the air','it can he sed as ai radiator, t o Wnrm the roourin which it is'placed.
Hztvingthns fully described my improved 'stove and heater, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 1f The combination of thevertical nnnulnrilnesfo, and the flue hetiveenvthe cylinders z' and k, with the horizontal ues m and f 'and {ire-box d, substantially as specified.
2. The removable cap ff, in combinationv with the pipe or e f and register-oep r, so that alle? 'the linesv can be'reedily, cleaned, substantially es specified.
The openpassege'ef, opening into the r-e below 'the gas-burner, in combination with the grated gesburner e, re-box d, and opening d", suhstnntiallyns and for the purposes specified.
