IMPROVEMENT IN AIR-HEATING- FURNACES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER H. CAR'MAN, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Air-Heating Furnace; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in furnaces for heating air for warming-pun poses, having particular reference to the grate and drum or air-heating chamber, and consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the furnace, with the casing or oven ofi, showing the fire-box and feeding-tube in section, and the course of the products of combustion by arrows.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the lines a: a; and y y of fig. 1.
Figure 3 is an end view of the fire-grate, with the gear-wheels off. l
Figure 4 is a detailed view of the grate, showing the method of supporting and revolving it.

A represents the fire-box. B is thetube, through which the coal is conducted to the grate.
O is the ash-pit.
D represents the grate.
E is a tight vertical cylinder or drum, containing vertical air-tubes F.
This cylinder E is connected with the fire-box by means of the flneG.
H is the hot-air chamber, and
I represents the casing or oven, which is built of brick or other suitable material, by which the furnaceis surrounded. The cold air enters the tubes F from the bottom.
The products of combustion pass through the cylinderE in a horizontal direction, as indicated by the arrow; but the heat will, of course, till the cylinder or drum, and heat the tubes F, so that the air in them will be raised to the desired degree. V
The tubes F are tapering, as seen, from the bottom up, so that the expanded air will be discharged into the chamber H in strong currents. These tubes ma be lnore or less in number, as may be desired. t
J represents apertures in the casing I, through which the heated air escapes, or from which it may be. conducted to any part of the building.
K is the pipe, through which the smoke and pro-- ducts of combustion are dischargedl The fuel is introduced into the inclined tube L, from whence it slides into the vertical tube B, from whence it is delivered to thefire. Y
' The grate D is formed by combining a number (more or less) of sectional pieces, as seen in fig. 4, which are hung on pivots, so that they will freely revolve.
The back ends are supported on the bar m.
The front end is supported in a socket-piece, a, which turns on the bar 0. The socket for the tenon on the end of the grate-section, is square, which the grate fits, so that the real pivot of the grate is at 1), supported on the bar 0.
On the outside of the bar 0, attached to the socketpiece n, (by riveting or otherwise,) are cog-wheels,'q,-.
which mesh into each other, as seen in fig. 2, so that when any one of the gears is turned, they will all turn; and all the grate-sections will be revolved or agitated.
R is a lever, attached to oneof the gears, or to the end of the socket-piece at, for operating the gears and agitating the grate. In this manner the ashes can be shaken from a broad gate with the greatest ease.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the sockets,'or thimbles n, with the grate-bars and gear-wheels q, arranged and operated substantially as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
2. The drum E, provided with the vertical tapered tubes F, and arranged within the oven I, withrefer ence to the hot-air chamber A, fines G and K and apertures J, as and for the purpose herein shown and described. 1
