Description
L. H. PELTASON.
CARTON. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 3, 1907;
Patented Dec. 15, 1908. 1 2 0. 2. Y
INVENTOR few/ W 6 THE NORRIS PETERS cm. WASHINGTON, n. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEO H. PELTASON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CARTON.
To all whom "it may concern:
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 3, 1907.
Patented Dec. 15, 1908.
Serial No. 376,985.
The article to be packed, illustrated in the Be it known that I, LEO H. PELTASON, a drawings by the lamp chimney 13, is then citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved carton for glassware and the like, and has for its object to provide a light and safe receptacle in which fragile articles, such as lamp chimneys, may be packed for transportation; the articles being separately packed and the cartons being of a conformation admitting of their being used as permanent packages when the articles are displayed for sale by the retailer.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a vertical view in section of a device embodying my invention, showing a lamp chimney in place within the carton. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the blank from which the lining member of the carton is stamped. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a carton and its contained lamp chimney, taken along the line 38 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the inner lining of the carton after the same has been stamped from the blank shown in Fig. 2, and rolled to a cylindrical form for insertion within the carton.
As shown in the drawings, the carton of my invention consists of the outer cylinder 5 provided with the bottom 6 and top 7. The inner lining of the cart'on is designated by the numeral 8 and comprises a bottom section 9 and vertical members 10. Two of these inner lining members 8 are stamped from a single sheet of corrugated paper, such sheet being indicated by the numeral 11 in Fig. 2, the sheet being out along the lines 12-12 as shown in Fig. 2. The member 8 having been cut from the sheet 11 is rolled into cylindrical form as shown in Fig. 1, and is then slid into place within the outer shell or cylinder 5. The vertical members 10 are of such a length as to extend above the top of the carton when the base member 9 is in place at the bottom of the carton.
slid into place within the inner lining and the tops of the members 10 are then brought over the top of the chimney 13 and folded over each other so as to overlap and form a cushion within the mouth of the top of the chimney, at the point indicated in Fig. 1 by the numeral 1 1.
Some of the advantages attained by my invention are the economy with which the inner lining 8 is formed, the economy of its application arising from the fact that it is retained in place within the outer shell or cylinder 5 without the use of any adhesive or fastening device, and the cushion which is formed by the overlapping of the upper ends of the members 10, serving to hold the lamp chimney in position within the carton and to protect it from breakage in the event of its being subjected to a Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is:
The improved carton herein described, comprising in combination with the outer cylinder 5, the bottom 6 and the'top 7 the lining 8 formed from a single sheet of corrugated paper seated within the cylinder 5 and adapted to fit securely therein and consisting of the base section 9 having vertically projecting sections 10 of such length as to extend above the top of the carton when the base member 9 is in place at the bottom of the carton, said vertically projecting sections 10 being adapted to overlap -at their upper ends to form the cushion 1 1, substantlally as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEO H. PELTASON.
Witnesses ALFRED A. EIOKS, lVALTER G. STEIN.
