WIRE STRETCHER .AND FASTENER.
' novel arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
rlhe object of the invention is to provide a means for stretching the line wires of a fence which meansis permanently attached to one of the fence posts and is so arranged that when operated it will exert a pull on the wirel extending beyond the opposite sides of the post.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a post equipped with the wire stretcher. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with parts in section of a winding spool forming a part of the Wire stretcher. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are side elevations partly in section of several forms of means for attaching the wire stretcher to the post.
The wire stretcher consists of the members 1, 2 and 3 each of which is provided with a screw-threaded end 4 which is adapted to enter the post of the fence. The outer portions of the members 1, 2 and 3 are rectangular in cross section and may be operated upon by a wrench when the members are screwed into position upon the fence post. The member 1 is provided with a rectangular opening 5. The member 2 is provided with a rectangular opening 6 with the projecting parallel flanges 7 having perforations 8. The member 3 is provided with the parallel flanges 9 having perforations 10. The shafts 11 are squared at their ends as at 12. The member 1 is located near the base of the post, the member 2 at an intermediate portion of the post and the member 3 in the vicinity of the top of the post.
As illustrated 1n F ig. 1, the flanges 7 of the member 2 are opposite the opening 5 of the member 1 and the opening 6 of the member 2 is opposite the flanges 9 of the member 3. '.lhus in placing the shafts 11 in position upon the said members the lower squared en ds of the said shafts are first inserted in the specification of Letters Patent.

openings 5 and 6 of the members 1 and 2 respectively, then, the upper squared ends of the said shafts are passed laterally between the fianges 7 and 9 of the members 2 and 3 respectively and are held therein by the cotter pins 13 which are passed through the perforations 8 and 10. By reason of the fact that the end 12 of the shafts 11 are squared the said shafts are held against rotation in the said members. Each shaft 11 is provided along its length with a series of perforations 14 and the spools 15 are rotatably mounted upon the said shaft. The upper ends of the spools 15 are squared as at 16, which portions are ada ted to be operated upon by a wrench wien the spools are turned. Immediately below the squared portions 16 each spool is provided with a relatively broad flange 17 having transverse perforations 18. The lower ends of the spools 15 are provided with flanges 19 and the hooks 20 are integral with the spools and are located between the fianges 17 and 19. The hooks 20 on each spool are disposed substantially in parallel relation to each other and consequently one or the other of the said hooks may be engaged with the line wire irrespective of the directions in which the spool may be turned. To tighten the line wire 21 it is laterally caught into engagement With one of the hooks 20 and the spool 15 is turned, whereby the line wire is wound upon the same and is stretched from opposite directions toward the ost upon which the spool is mounted. hen the wire is sufficiently drawn a pin 22 is passed through one of the perforations 18 and one of the perforations 14 in the shaft 11, whereby, the said spool is fixed with relation to the said shaft. The spools upon the same shaft 11 are held at proper distances apart by the pins 23 which also pass through the perforations 14 and prevent the said spool from moving longitudinally of the said shaft.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is In combination with shafts having rotata` ble wire engaging members located thereon, supporting members for the shafts adapted to be arranged in alincment with eachother, the upper and lower members having shaft receiving openings of different configuration and which are adapted to retain the shafts In testimony that I claim the foregoing as against rotation and the intermediate memi my own, I have hereto aHiXed my signature ber having shaft receiving openings the upin the presence of two Witnesses.
