FENCE-WIRE STRETCH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,554, dated September 15, 1891.
Application filed June l2, 1891. Serial No. 396,016 (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE SHILLINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roann, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Fence-Vire Stretcher, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stretchers for fence-wires, and especially to that class thereof known as mid-wire take-upf and the object of the same is to effect certain improvements therein.
To this end the invention consists in the specific details of cnstruction hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of wire fence with one of the wires tightened by my improved device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view showing the manner of using the stretcher. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the parts of the stretcher slightlyT separated.
Referring to the said drawings, the letter W designates a fence-wire, which may be either plain or barbed, and which is stretched in the usual manner along one side of the field and is secured by staples to the posts P, as shown.
The present invention is designed for application to the wire between its ends or fastching-points, and is for the purpose of taking up what slack there may be.
My improved stretcher comprises a V- shaped body V, at whose angle, on its upper side, is formed a groove G, with projections or ears E rising from either side thereof, for a purpose to be presently explained. Through the ends of the V-shaped body is passed a roller R, having a head II on one end and having a slot S in its body, and transversely through this roller, at right angles to the direction of the slot, is formed an opening O, which is near that end of the roller remote from its head.
The letter C designates a collar surrounding the bearing for one end of the roller on the outer side of the body V, and this collar is provided with a number ofnotches N.
P is a pin adapted to pass through the opening O.
The operation of th'e device is as follows: The slot S in the roller R is passed astride the wire at the proper point, the roller being at this time partially inserted through one of the bearings in the body V. The roller is then pushed farther through the body V until the opening O passes through the collar C, or, rather, nearly through the same, and the members of the body are then sprung toward each other and the pin P inserted in the opening. In this position the outward tendency of the members of the body will force the notches N into engagement with the pin and prevent the roller from turning. A wrench is now put on the head H and the roller turned to take up what slack there may be in the wire W, the latter passing between the ears E and into the groove G and resting therein while the roller is being turned. During the latter operation the sides of the body spring inward slightly to allow the extremities of the pin to move from one pair of notches N into the nextpair, and so on around the collar. After the wire has been drawn sufficiently tight the wrench is removed from the head, and the entire stretching device may be left permanently on the wire.
Considerable change in the details of construction inay be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Vhat is claimed as new isd l. In awire-stretcher, the combination, with a V- shaped body having transverse holes through its ends and a collar around one of said holes provided with notches, of a roller having a head at one end, a slot in its body and a transverse opening through its other end and across said slot, and a pin adapted to pass through said opening and to engage said notches by the springing of the body, as set forth.

In a wire-stretcher, the combination, with aV-shaped body having a groove at its angle on one side, ears at the sides of said groove, the ends of the body having atransverse hole and a collar on the outer side of one end In testimony that I c] aim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 1o presence of two Witnesses.
