FENCE-WIRE TIGHTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,348, dated August 29, 1882,
Application filed J one 23, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE MENG, of Oak Harbor, in the county of Ottawa and State of Improvements in Fence-NVire Tighteners; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view, showing my improved wire-stretcher in position. Fig. 2 is Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View.
Like letters refer to like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to fence-wire stretchers; and its object is to provide a device which shall be simple, convenient, and easily operated.
The invention consists in the improved construction of the device, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My improved wire-stretcher consists of a cylindrical stem, A, made of iron or other material, and having one end squared, at B, to receive a wrench or crank, 0, used in conjunction therewith. The stem or body A has an opening, I), to receive the end of the fencewire, and additional openings, E E, on the sides of opening D, to receive the ends or legs of a wire bail, F.
GGr in the drawings represent the fenceposts, and H H the wires to which my invention is applied.
The operation is as follows: The end of the wire to be stretched is passed through the perforation D of one of the stems A on the outside of the end post of the fence. The crank is then applied, and, using the post as a bearing, the stem A is turned and the wire Wound upon it until taut. The bail F is then inserted into the openings E E, thus preventing the unwinding of the wire and retaining the stem A in position.
1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesv The stem A, having openings D E and squared end B, in combination with the bail E, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE MENG. Witnesses H. H. FRY, O. MEINKE.
