Beit known that I, DAVID A. GooDRioii, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Platte, in the county of Lincoln and State of Nebraska have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fence Structures, of which the following is a specification..

This invention relates to fence structures, and has for an object to provide in a structure of this character novel and improved forms of posts having notches of novel structure for receiving and holding the line wires, and to provide one or more of such posts with wire tightening devices operable to receive the terminals of the line wires and to wind the terminals of the wires in a manner so that after the desired tension has been obtained they will be effectively held within the notches.

In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several viewsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a fence structure embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the notched line posts.

The fence structure comprises the corner post 1, and the line posts 2 and 3. The corner post is preferably constructed from a single angle iron bar so as to present the angularly disposed vertical flanges l and 5 which are provided with passages 6 which are arranged in coincidence with each other so as to receive the line wires 7, which eX- tend through receiving slots in the line post 2. The line post 2 is preferably constructed from a single angle iron bar as illustrated, the flange 8 of the bar is provided with superimposed line wire receiving and retaining notches of passages 9 which are substantially of V-form, the opposite inclined walls being adapted for effective frictional engagement with the line wires so as to hold them securely against displacement from the pos The flange 8 of the said post 2 is provided with slots 10, each having the vertical branch portion 11 and horizontal branch portions 12, the portions 11 and 12 being in communication with each other and being arranged with respect to each other so as to present superimposed horizontal stop shoulders 13. These stop shoulders are arranged substantially in steplike or zig-zag manner and they provide means for preventing the possible escape of the wire should the same escape from the passage 9. The uppermost horizontal branch of the slot 10 opens directly onto the vertical edge of the flange 8 and the lowermost ver- 60 tical branch 11 opens directly into the passage 9 so as to facilitate the attachment of the wire to the post. The line wires are connected with and adapted to be tensioned by suitable winding devices on the post 3, the shafts 'of which winding devices are indicated at 18.

Incident to the inclination of the side walls of the passages 9 and owing to the fact that the upper portions of these passages are considerably larger than that diameter of the vertical branch portions 11 of the slots 10, slots 27 are formed at the upper ends of the passages 9. Should the line 1 wires become loose and tend to move upwai'dly they will be engaged with the inclined side walls of the slots 9 and guided thereby in their movements to positions where they, in all probability, will engage beneath the shoulders 27 to be held thereby 80 against movement in the branch portions 11, thus guarding to a considerable extent against casual displacement of the wire from the post. At the corners of a fence structure the corner post and adjacent line S5 posts may be connected by

28 and 29. When the notched posts are arranged to cross a gullcy the passages 9 may be inverted so that the upward pulling strain `upon the wires from the posts on grade will assist in holding the wires securely seated.

I claim:

1. A fence post having a substantially V- shaped passage therein, and a slot opening at one end through one side of the post and communicating at its opposite end with the enlarged end of the passage, said slot being of less width than said enlarged end of the passage to provide shoulders at the opposite sides of the latter. l

2. A fence post having a substantially V- shaped passage, and a slot formed of communicating horizontal and Vertical portions opening at one end through one side of the post and communicating at its opposite end With the enlarged end of the passage, said slot being of less Width than said enlarged end of the passage to provide shoulders at the opposite sides of the latter.
