TRACE Specification of Letters Patent.`
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application 'lled March 7, 1908. Serial No. 419,677.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J AVELET, citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Traces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to traces, and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous means, hereinafter described and claimed, for reinforcing and preventing wear of a trace at the point where the same is connected to a swingle-tree.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim 4when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is an elevation showing the outer side of my improvements. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the inner side thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal-central section showing the trace and the parts therein and thereon. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the metallic plates B removed from the trace.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:
A is a trace having by preference a plurality of slots a to receive a swingle-tree and also having a plurality of tongue-receiving a ertures t, and B B are slotted plates of s eet-metal which are secured in the trace between the layers of leather thereof and have for their oflice to prevent Wear of the leather forming the walls of the slots a.
C is my novel, metallic device for incasing the trace and protecting the same against rough usage and frictional Wear. The said device O comprises a body and a buckle iixed with respect to and extending from one end of the body; and, as shown, the body has an outer side wall c in which is a slot d partly surrounded by a lateral liange c, and also has upper and lower walls f g and an inner side wall h, the latter being disposed in rear of the slot d. The buckle of the device C is made up of a frame m, joined at one end to the upper and lower walls f g ofthe body and having a cross-bar n, a transverse loop p fixed to the frame m and disposed at the opposite side thereof, with reference to the cross-bar n, and a tongue r pivoted o n the cross-bar n and arranged to be put into one of the apertures b of the trace A and also arranged to bear against the transverse loop p, after the manner illustrated.
In the practical use of my novel device C, the same is arranged on the trace in the manner shown-that is to say, the trace is disposed in the body of thedevce so that one of the slots a in the trace registers with the slot d in the body, and the trace is extended through the buckle and receives in one of its apertures b the tongue r of the buckle, whereby it will be manifest that when Jforward pull isv exerted on the trace the tongue r will bear against the transverse loop p of the buckle and in that way hold the trace against casual movement in the device C. It will also be manifest from the foregoing that my novel device C is adapted to be adjusted and adjustably fixed on the trace in order to meet diierent conditions.
When arranged on a trace in the manner shown and described, my improved device C will obviously prevent a sWingle-tree from enlarging a slot a of the trace, and will also protect the trace against injury when the trace is roughly handled.
In addition to the practical advantages herenbefore ascribed to my novel device C, it will be noted that the device is adapted to coperate with a plate B in preventing enlargement of a slot a, in the trace; and it will also be noted that the device is simple and inexpensive in construction, and when nickel-plated or otherwise embellished is calculated to enhance the nished appearance of a harness.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,
The combination with a trace having a slot and an aperture, of a reinforcing device comprisin a body receivin the trace and having a s ot in one side wal registered with the slot in the trace, and a buckle iixed to and extending from one end of the body and In testimony whereof I have hereunto set having a frame, a cross-bar, a transverse loop my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witbetween Which and the cross-bar the trace 1s messes.
received, and a tongue pivoted on' the cross- ALBERT JAVELET. 5 bar and arranged to extend through the Witnesses;
aperture of the trace and also arranged to DENNISON,
bear against the said transverse loop. A. PANALLE.
