Description
UNITED STATES ANDREW J'. JOHNSON,
0E CLEVELAND, oHio.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARS FOR TUBS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
192,121, dated June 1.9, 1877; application filed March 29,1877
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ANDREW J. JoENsoN, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ears for Tubs, Src.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, which form part ot' this specilication.
My invention relates to ears for tubs and other similar articles; and consists in a slotted plate provided with a separate flanged loop, which fits into said slot, and to which the bail is attached, as will be hereinafter .fully speciied and claimed.
In the drawing, Figure l represets a tub,r
`provided with an ear, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents the slot-provided plate as cut from the blank. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same after its'pointed or penetrating ends have been bent at right angles to the main part of the plate. Fig. 4 re'spresents the bail-loop of the ear. Fig. 5 shows an inside view of the plate with loop in position. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the plate and loop. Fig. 7 represents the bail in position in the loop of the ear. Y
The plate A is cut from a suitable blank of iron or other suitable material, and is provided with the longitudinal slot B. Itis bent, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to formthe pointed or penetrating endslO, by which 4the ear is secured to the tub.
. I do not connemyself to the particular configuration of the plate here shown, as the same inay be constructed ot' any other proper form.
` D represents the earloop, provided with lianges d d. It consists essentially of a plate bent to form the groove e. Said loop D is inserted in the slot B from the inside of the plate, so that the loopextends outside ot' the face ot' the plate, as shown in Figs. 5 and 7. These two parts, the plate and the loop, the latter fitting loosely in the former, constitute the bail-ea n.
When the loop has been inserted in the slot of the plate the latter is secured to the tub by driving the pointed ends through the ma- .terial of the saine and clinching them on the inner side. rlhe bail is then inserted through the loop and its end bent to prevent its withdrawal. In the case of a tub, a second plate is secured a suitable distance from the first, and the other end of the bail is passed through its loop and bent, as before described.
What I claim is- As an article ot' manufacture, the slotted plate A, provided with penetrating or attaching points, and the loop D, substantially as and for the purpose described.` In testimony whereof I have signed -my name to this specification in the presence ot 'two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREW J. JOHNSON. Witnesses:
FRANCIS ToUMEY, W. E. DoNNELLY.
