Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE. Y
JOHN KENNEDY, OF OSAGE MISSION, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN MOFFIT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRACE-BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,565, dated August 5, 1873 application filed March 22, 1 73.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KENNEDY, of Osage Mission, in the county of Neosho and State of Kansas, have invented a new and usefulImprovementin Trace-B uckles, of which the following is a specification This invention consists in a trace-buckle in which the tongue is pivoted, and provided with a look, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is an edge view. Fig. 2 is a section of the buckle taken on the line 00 x of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top or plan View.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
A is a central plate, of nearly square form, surrounded by loops for attaching portions of the harness. B is a tongue-plate, provided at one end with angular side projections and a slot, the former to fit correspondingly-shaped notches in lugs O O, and the latter to receive pivots projectin g inwardly from said lugs. The slot in the tongue-plate not only allows it to be turned upon its pivot, but also allows it a limited longitudinal movement. D is the tongue attached to the under side of the tongue-plate. The tongue-plate is raised from the central plate A the thickness of the trace, so that the trace passes through between the two plates and through the openingD beneath the loop E. This loop E is for attaching the breeching-strap. The loop F is for the hame-strap, and the two side loops G and H are for the pad-strap and the girth.
As the trace is passed forward the tongue enters the hole therein, and as it draws back it pulls the ton gue-plate into the angular recesses in the lugs of the plate A, and thereby locks the same, as seen in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. This movement of the tongue is effected by the slots in the plate before mentioned. The end of the tongue passes through a recess in the plate A, as seen in Fig. 2.
With this buckle the trace is kept straight and smooth, without cracks or wrinkles.
The horizontal slot in tongue-plate admits of a lock, and while the tongue-piece of other buckles may be raised, mine cannot, because it fastens as soon as it goes into the slot.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A trace-buckle, consisting of the looped plate A. provided with lugs O O, and the tongue-plate B provided at one end -with tongue D and at the other end with a slot and angular projections, the slot to receive the pivot-pin and the projections to fit correspondingly-shaped recesses in the lugs, as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN KENNEDY.
Vtitnesses:
O. A. LAYNG, S. WILsoN.
