Description

HENRY. H. AKERS, OF CHE'RRYViE, KANSAS.
STOVEPIPE-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application filed August 21, 1908. Serial No. 449,691.
T o all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY H. Axims, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherryvale, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Stovepipe-Fastener, of which the -following isa specification.
This invention relates to stove pipe fasteners, and has` for its object vto provide improved means for detachably uniting adjacent sections of pipe thereby to prevent accidental separation of the same.
The invention further has for its object to provide a fastener which not only serves to secure stove pipe sections together, but also serves as a means for locking a thimble in the flue hole of a chimney.
A fastener constructed in accordance with this invention, comprises in its general features two members, each of which is fastened to a pipe section at their adjacent ends, one of said members having a shouldered proj ection formed with notches and the other member consisting of a spring having a hook adapted to engage and interlock with said shouldered member.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to vwithin the scope of the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1, is a view in elevation and partly broken away, of a stove pipe, and thimble mounted in a flue hole of a chimney, showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2, is a detail plan view showing the invention applied to a thimble, and section of stove pipe. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section of the overlapping ends of two stove pipe sections showing the invention applied. Fig. 4, is a detail view in perspective of one of the members of the fastener, adapted to be used with a thimble.
The fastener comprises two members 1 and 2 each of which is fastened to a section of stove pi e, as shown. The'member 1 is preferably ormed of a flat strip of metal havmg one end thereof provided with an offset portion or shoulder 3 defining an extension or head 4, the metal forming the head being provided with spaced longitudinal slits and the metal between said slits pressed downwardly to produce a-vseries of locking teeth or serrations 5, for engagement with the terminal hook 6 of the member 2. The member 2 is also preferably stamped or otherwise formed from a single strip ofy metal one end of which is riveted or otherwise secured to the exterior wall of the adjacent pipe section, while the opposite end thereof 1s spaced from the pipe to form a s ring tongue 6 lterminating 1n the hook or hp 6.
1n Figs. 1 and 2, the invention is shown as applied to a thimble 7, and a stove pipe section 8, the member 1, as shown in Fig. 4, being formed with an elongated body portion 9, having at one end two flexible projections 10. The body portion 9, extends from end to end of the thimble 7, on the inside of the latter with the shoulder 3 of the head 4, abutting against the flange 11 on one end of the thimble and with one of the iiexible securing fingers' 10 bent over the edge of the thimble at its other end, and clamped thereto. The thimble 7 being inserted in the flue hole 12 of a chimney, its flange 11 and the shoulder 3 of the head 4, abuts against the wall 13, and the other flexible finger 10 is bent against the wall 13, on the inside of the chimney by reaching through the thimble. lt will thus be seen that the thimble can neither be shoved through or pulled out of the flue hole 12. One end of the stove pipe section 8 is then shoved into the thimble 7, until the hook 6 on the spring tongue 6, moving over the serrations 5, snaps into engagement with one of the teeth thereby securely locking the pipe section and thimble together.
In Fig. 3, the invention is shown as applied to the joint of two pipe sections. In this instance the fastener is located on the inside of the sections. The member 1, is riveted at 14 to a pipe section 15, while the member 2 is riveted at 16 to a pipe section 17. The end of the pipe section 17 is pushed into the end of the pipe section 15, -forming the overlapping joint shown in Fig. 3, the member 2, automatically being brought into locked engagement with the member 1, in the manner, hereinbefore described.
Where the fastener is on the outside, as in Fig. 1, the fastener may be disengaged by pressing down the spring tongue 6 and disengaging the hook 6 from the serrations 5.
Where the fastener is on the inside of tWo pipe sections, as shown in Fig. 3, the hook 6 may be disengaged from the serrations 5 by turning the pipe section '17, when the member 2, will be unlocked from the member l, and the pipe section 17 may be withdrawn from the pipe section 15.
A suitable collar may be provided, which is located on the pipe section 8, between the shoulder 4, of member l and the thimble, but as it forms no part of the invention, is not here shown.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
l. A fastener for stove pipe joints comprising a metallic strip having one end thereof oii set to produce a stop shoulder terminating in a longitudinally disposed head provided with depending teeth and having its opposite end bifurcated to produce spaced iiexible securing iingers, and a spring strip having a terminal lip adapted to automatically lock with the teeth on the head.
2. The combination with a chimney breast including a thimble and pipe section, of an elongated metallic strip extending through said thimble and having one end thereof off set to produce a stop shoulder arranged to bear against the front wall of the chimney breast, and terminating in a longitudinally disposed head having depending teeth formed on the lower face thereof, the-opposite end of the metallic strip being bifurcated to produce spaced securing fingers, one of which is arranged to bear against the rear wall of the chimney breast, and a spring metal strip fastened to the pipe section and provided with a terminal lip arranged to engage the teeth on the head.
3. The combination with a chimney breast including a thimble and pipe section, of a metallic plate arranged Within the thimble and having one end thereof bent to produce a stop shoulder arranged to bear against the front wall of the chimney breast and defining a longitudinally disposed. head'and having its opposite end providedwith a longitudinal slot forming spaced securing i'ingers, one of which is adapted to be bent upwardly in engagement with the rear wall of the chimney breast, there being spaced longitudinal slits formed in the head and the metal between said slits bent downwardly to produce depending loclring teeth, and a metal strip having one end thereof secured to the pipe section and its opposite end provided with a terminal lip for engagement with the teeth on said head.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, l have hereto a'liXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
