FLUE-THIMBLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1908.
Application filed June 12, 1907. Serial No. 378,623.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. HEN- DERSON, citizen of the United States, residing at Brashear, in the county of Adair and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flue-Thimbles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates in general to stove pipes and more particularly to a novel clamping device for securely retaining a stove pipe in engagement with a flue thimble.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which operates in an effective manner to prevent the end of the stove pipe from slipping away from the thimble, and eliminates the necessity for wiring the pipe as is frequently the custom.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the clamping device applied to a stove pipe thimble, portions being broken away. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the clamping ring and retaining strips.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a flue thimble which is of the con ventional construction, and 2 a stove pipe having the end thereof received within the thimble. A clamping ring 3 surrounds the stove pipe 2 adjacent the mouth of the thimble and is held in position by means of the retaining strips 4.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the first three figures of the drawings the clamping ring 3 is in the nature of a band having the extremities thereof extended out wardly and connected by the bolt 5. The retaining strips 4 engage the clamping ring 3 and extend longitudinally along the exterior of the thimble 1 upon opposite sides thereof, and are connected to the said thimble by means of the rivets or similar fastening members 6.
The rear end portions of the retaining strips are extended laterally to form projections 7 which serve to engage the partition or wall through which the flue extends, thereby effectively preventing the pipe 2 slipping away from the flue or the flue thimble being Withdrawn from position.
In the preferred form of the invention the retaining members 4 are in the nature of sheet metal strips doubled upon themselves at their intermediate points whereby the loops 8 are formed for the reception of the clamping ring 3. It will be observed that the said retaining strips 4 are provided adj acent their outer ends with crimp portions constituting the stops 12 and operating to engage the wall or partition through which the thimble extends to hold the same securely in position.
In applying the flue thimble it will be ob ring arranged adjacent the mouth of the flue thimble, and retaining strips projecting beyond the flue thimble and engaging the clamping ring, the said retaining strips ex tending longitudinally along the flue thimble and being rigidly'secured to the same, the rear ends of the strips being provided with lateral projections to engage the rear face of the wall while intermediate portions of the retaining strips are formed with stops for engaging the front of the wall.
