Be it known that I, WILLIAM II. GASKILL, a citizen of the United States residing in the lphia, State of Forms lvania, have invented a new and useful F0 ding Umbrella and Cane, of which the following 1s a specification. It has heretofore been the ractice in confo dable canes or umbrella sticks, to provide a single link or knuckle which permits one member, as the handle member, to be turned downwardly at a articular angle so that it can lie longitudinally but by reason of this construction, the foldable members are prevented from being assembled closely against each other and there is furthermore,

' liability in the old construction, to which I 1 have referred, of

angle and when turned the link or knuckle being broken or snap ed at its joints unless the handle is turns down with reat care.

In order to obviate the oregoing disadvantages, I have devised. a novel construcfoldable cane or umbrella which can be disconnected and folded downw'ardl by the operator stany desired angle wit out damage or liability of breaking any of the links or knuckles employed and I furthermore" provide means whereby the members when assembled can lie longitudinally very close to each other, thereby enablin the cane umbrella or parasol to be readily fblded and transported under all conditions.

To the above ends my invention consists offa novel construction of a connection has tween'the handle and body of the cane orunibrella stick proper, whereby the'handie can bere'adi'ly turned downwardly at any downwardly, said handle orti'on can be" assembled longitudinall in close juxtaposition to the body of the stic or umbrella.

It further consists of other novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

. eferring to the drawings '.-In the drawings I have shown a construction which I have found to operate successfully in prac tice but it will be evident that 'the arrangement of the parts may be varied and other instrumentahties may be employed I which will come within the scope of my invention and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction as herein shown and described; but desire to make any changes which may come within the scope or spirit of my invention, which may be necessary.

I may locate the joint at about the middle of the cane body and I may tmnspose or reverse the manner of connecting the parts without departing from the spirit of myinvention. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a. folding cone or umbrella, a. plurality of sections, means for enabling Stlltl seetions to be connected and disconnected from each other, a plurality of links connected to one of said sections, and disconnected from the other section and formed with forks and tongues which are suitably pivoted to each other, said forks and tongues being angularl y arranged with respect to each other, and means for prcventnig said links from being witl'rdrawn from the section in which they are loosel contained.
