Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. ENGLISH, OF FARMINGTON, MISSOURI.
SURGICAL DEVICE.
provide an apparatus for the assistance of women in childbirth.
Another object in view is the provision of a device that may be adjusted for various sized persons and operated with the same advantage.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the figure is a perspective View of a bed with the in-.
vention applied thereto in operative position.
In accomplishing the objects set forth the present'invention is preferably constructed as shown in the accompanying drawings in which 1 indicates an ordinary bed or couch, and 2 a base or retaining strap having means of adjustment as buckles 33.
Attached to the base strap are two hand tugs which are composed of similar parts. Rings 4 are attached to the base support and to the tug strap 10 by snap hooks 5. Hand holds 9 afford a grasp for the hands of the patient. Attached to the hand tugs a little above the center by connections 88 are stirrups 77. The hand tugs 10 are of sufficient length to allow the occupant of the couch to secure an easy grasp on the rings therein, and the stirrups 8 are so attached to the hand tug straps or connections as to slightly contract the body of the occupant of the couch whose feet are placed in the stirrups and whose hands grasp the hand tug rings.

2. In a device of the class described, means to engage a stationary abutment, straps slidably mounted on the' abutment-engaging means, hand holds carried by the straps, and stirrups interposed between the hand holds and the engaging means.
3. In a device of the character described, a retaining strap encircling a stationary abutment, tug straps, rings for connectingsaid tug straps and said retaining straps, hand-holds carried at the ends of the tug straps, and stirrups interposed between the hand-holds and the retaining strap.
