SURGICAL APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,504, dated May 31, 1904.
i I Application filed April 6, 1904. Serial No. 201,890. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN K-LnINBAoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane,
in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Imtrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cap in position upon the head of a person, and Fig.
3 is an enlarged section through one of the handle-adjusting devices.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 1 are pulleys adapted to be supported in any suitable manner upon a ceiling or other structure, and arranged on these pulleys is a rope 2, the ends of whichextend through yokes 3, which are secured to grips 4. Balls 5 are fastened to the ends of the rope 2 and have curved passages 6 therein, through which the rope extends, and by sliding these balls 5 upon the rope when pressure is not exerted upon them the grips 4 can be adjusted to any desired distance from the'floor.
' A pulley 7 is mounted upon the rope 2 at a point between the pulleys 1 and is connected to an X-shaped plate by means of arms 9, between which the pulley is journaled. The plate 8 is concavo-convex, and from the ends thereof extend straps 10, to the ends of which are secured chin and back pads 11 and 12, respectively. These pads are in the form of cushions, which are located on straps 13 and 14, and these straps are secured to the straps 10 by means of buckles or in any other suitable manneiz Side straps 15 connect the straps 13 and 14 near the upper and lower portions thereof.
In using the apparatus the head of the patient is secured under the cap 8 by detaching the straps 13 and 14 and placing the pads 11 and 12 under the chin and the back portion of the head, respectively. The straps are then readjusted, so as to prevent the parts from slipping from their applied positions, and the patient grasps the grips 4 and draws downward upon them, thus raising himself from the floor by the upward pressure exerted 'upon the head. By providing the adjustment for the grips 4 the apparatus can be arranged for use by persons of different heights.
The apparatus is very simple and inexpensive in construction and forms a thorough means for strengthening the spinal column and neck.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that the combination of supporting devices, a rope thereon, grips engaged by the rope, and adjusting devices connected to the rope; of a pulley movably mounted upon the rope between its supporting devices, an X-shaped cap .connected to the pulley and supported thereby, a chin and a back pad, straps adjustably connecting the same to the .cap, and adjustable side straps connecting the pads.
1 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN KLEINBACH. Witnesses:
