EXERCISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1905.
Application filed September 23, 1903. Serial No. 174,265.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADoLrH RosENTHAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uniontown, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Exercising Devices, of which improvement the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in appliances for physical exercise; and the object is to produce a physical exercising device adapted to be positioned on a bed or other article upon which a person may recline or lie in such wise that the person occupying the bed, &c., may exercise while in a reclining or horizontal position; and to accomplish this object my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved exercising device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of same applied to the head-posts of the bed. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same, showing the application as a foot-exerciser.
Referring to said drawings, A is a bed to the head-posts a a, foot-posts b b, or side rails d of which an exercising device D may be applied in such manner that the said exercising device may be so positioned thereon, both vertically and longitudinally, that the style of exercise desired by the operator may be varied. In the drawings, particularly Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the exercising device is shown as comprising a bracket 1, which is slidably and adjustably mounted upon the upright posts 2 2, which are slidable upon the side rails (Z and adapted to be adjusted or positioned thereon at any desired point. Elastic cords or spiral springs 3 3, the lower ends of which are provided with suitable handles 4 4, are secured to the cross-bars 5 5 of the frame 6 or to any suitable point thereon. The said bracket is capable of being adjusted-a. a, elevated and loweredon said uprights or upon the posts of the bed to any desired position and to be held stationary thereon at the desired position by any suitable clamping device 6 having a downwardlyprojecting leg or member 7, which is secured to the collar 8, which is slidably mounted on said uprights or the posts of the bed. In Fig. 3 I show the exercising device applied directly to the head-posts of the bed, being capable of any desired adjustment thereon, as heretofore described.
Some of the advantages of my device are that invalids and fleshy people may by the use of the same derive all the benefits of arm and chest exercises Without undergoing the fatigue of standing.
Another advantage is that any person can exercise and develop the arm and chest muscles without unduly taxing the heart and lungs, as is usual in exercising in a vertical position.
I do not confine my invention to its application to a bed, as it may be applied to a cot, reclining-chair, or similar article.
In Fig. 4 the device is shown as arranged for leg exercise, in which case a stirrup 4 is substituted for the handle 4.
It will be noted by referring to the dotted positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3 that the spring 3 may be adjusted to any lateral or vertical position desired, and the turnbuckle 9, through which the said spring is connected With the bars 5 5, provides a means for additional adjustment.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1'. The combination with a bed-frame, of an exercising-device attachment therefor which is detachably supported thereby in position for use by the occupant of the bed.
2. The combination with a bed-frame, of another frame adjustably supported by the bed-frame for adjustment up and down to different heights, means for securing said frame where adjusted, and an exercising device supported by said adjustable frame.
3. The combination with a bed-frame, of another frame adjustably supported by the side rails of the bed-frame for adjustment along said side rails toward the foot or head of the bed, means for securing said frame where adjusted, and an exercising device supported by said adjustable frame.
4. The combination with a bed-frame, of another frame adjustably supported by the side rails of .the bed-frame for adjustment along said side rails toward the foot or head of the bed, means for securing said frame where adjusted, an exercising-device support adjustable up and down to different heights on the aforesaid adjustable frame, means for securing said exercising-device support where positioned, and an exercising device supported by said exercising-device support.
5. The combination with a bed-frame, of upright members supported thereby, another frame having brackets slidable up and down on said upright members, means for securing the brackets where adjusted, and an exercising device supported by said adjustable frame.
6. In an exercising device, the combination with a supporting-frame, of another frame extending outwardly from the supportingframe and pivotally connected to said supporting-frame to swing up or down from a horizontal position, means for securing said pivotally-mounted frame at any desired inclination, and an exercising device supported by said pivotally-mounted frame.
7. In an exercising device, the combination with a supporting-frame, of another frame extending outwardly from said supporting- I5 frame and connected thereto, said outwardlyextending frame having outwardly-extending bars adjustable toward and away from each other laterally to assume different positions,
and exercising devices supported by said bars 20 and adjustable lengthwise of said bars.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
