SADDLE FOR RET/LOVING THE SICK AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 112, dated January 21, 1837'.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HEZEKIAH L. THISTLE, of the city of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Saddle for Removing the Sick and Wounded and Answering also as a Pack-Saddle, which is described as follo-ws, reference being had to the anneXed drawings of the saine, making part of this specification.
The tree A is made of wood about two feet long; the width or spread adapted to the horses back ,-it is furnished with four springs B B B B shaped so as to fit the upper part, to which they are fastened by screws, rivets, or otherwise; and are turned up like coach springs having eyes attheir extremities through which are passed straps C C C C to secure the frame hereafter described-one pair of springs being in frontthe other in the rear, about one foot four inches apart ;-there are also suitable straps and girths to attach the tree to the body of the horse, and also to the breast strap and breeching, and other straps necessary for packing. The tree may be bare and left open for the free circulation of air between it and the horses back ;-or simply covered with leather; or it may be stuffed; the former mode, however, is preferred. The bed D is constructed by making an iron frame E a litt-le more than the average length and breadth of a man with the head end curved; covered with strong leather. The head and sides are also defended with strong leather, about 8 inches high for the support of the head, and six inches for the sides. This bed is supported on the springs to which it is attached by means of straps fastened to the sides of the frame and passed through the eyes o-f the springs as before described. There are two main straps F F attached to the sides of the frame near the upper end thereof reaching from the shoulders to the thighs, crossing each other over the breast, and secured by buckles fastened to the frame near the lower end fo-r keeping the body in its place.
A cushion or pad is placed upon the Abed at the upper end for the head to rest on. There is also a strapy Cr attached to the side of the bed near the center which passes around the thigh and is buckled to the outside of the bed in an oblique direction to prevent the wounded man from slipping down. A similar strap H is attached to the other side of the frame.
The invention claimed by the subscriber and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, consists in- The before-described saddle for conveying the sick and wounded and answering also as a pack saddle when not used for the above purpose, whether constructed in the precise manner here described or in any other producing a saddle substantially the same for a similar purpose.
