SURGINGLE.
Patented Aug. 2
NJPEYERS, Phom-Lhhngraphcr. Washingicn, D.C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE];
AMBROSE DUBY, OF CHELSEA, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS C. MULLOY, OF
4 BOSTON, MASSAOHUSETS.
SURCINGLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 170,367,707, dated August 2, 1887.
Application liled September 28, 1886. Serial No. 214,707. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBROSE DUBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sureingles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to asureingle in which springs are employed for connecting the straps or bands which are placed on the back and belly, respectively,of the horse. Iheimprovemcnts consist in certain details, which are herein first fully described withreference to the accompanying drawing, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
The said drawing represents my improved surcingle in perspective, the bell y'band being omitted.
1 may represent the pad or band, made to conform as nearly as possible to the horses back.
2 2 are spiral springs, protected from rubbing against the side of the stall by leather sheaths 3 8 sewed to pad or band 1. Inside of the leather sheaths 3 3 may be additional sheaths 3 3 of metal cylindrical in form. At top the springs are hung by yoke 4 from a short strap, 5, sewed outside the pad or band 1 at its central position. A similar yoke, G, at the bottom of the springs 2 2, has a slot, through which passes a short strap, 7, which is buckled to a strap, 8, for connection to the belly-band.
Of course it will be understood that the arrangement shown and described is duplicated on the other side of the surcingle.
To limit the extentto which the springs may be drawn out, the strap 7 is passed through a slot, 9, in the pad or band 1, and the move ment of the strap is arrested by having its upper end come in contact with the lower side of the slot.
Having thus described my invention, the
following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a snrcingle, the combination, with a slotted back-pad, of a looped strap having one end passed through said slot and both ends connected to the bell y-band, springs con nected to the back-pad at top, and suitable means for connecting them at bottom with the loop end of the strap, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a back pad or band and springs connected thereto, metallic sheaths covering said springs and fixed to the back pad or band, and the belly'band having suit able means whereby it may be connected with the springs, substantially as set forth.
3. In a surcinglc, the combination, with a slottedback-pad, a strapattached thereto near the center, a yoke on the end of said strap, and a pair of springs secured to said yoke, of a similar yoke at thelower ends ofsaid springs, and a looped strap secured to the belly-band and to the latter yoke, having one end passed through the slot in the back-pad, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. In combination with aback-pad, springs connected at one end thereto and at the other end to the belly band, metal sheaths surrounding said springs, and additional sheaths of leather surrounding the metal ones and attached to the backpad, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with a back-pad, springs connected at one end thereto and at the other end to the belly-band, and a stop on the backpad adapted to be engaged by and limit the movement of the bcllyband, substantially as set forth.
