W G. SGHAEPER.
HALTER.
No. 370,163. Patented Sept. 20, 1887.
W gawuamtoz 5513- 14/15. Q'Hozueg; I I
UNITED STATES XVILLIAM G. SCHAEFER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF GLADBROOK, IOXVA.
HALTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,163, dated September 20 1887.
Application filed January 31, 1887. Serial No. 225,967.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. SOHAEFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gladbrook, in the county of Tama, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Halters, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to halters; and my object is to provide a cheap, simple, strong, and durable halter, the principal parts of which are formed by a single piece of rope, thus doing away with knots and splices in the same, whereby the halter is rendered comfortable to the animal and the skin is not rubbed.
\Vith these general objects in View the in vention consists in certain features of construetion, hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a halter constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being in position upon a horses head. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the halter. Fig. 3 is a detail, in perspective, showing the manner of connecting the throat-lateh and cheek-strap with the crown -strap; and Fig. 4 is a perspective of a metal plate or hearing which I employ in the connection illustrated in Fig. 3.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention I prefer to employ a strap for the nose-band and crownpiece, in that by constant moving of the head of the animal these portions are more liable to be rubbed, and a strap is better for obviating such liabilities.
A represents the crown-piece, and A the nose-band, each of which is formed with loops, A at its ends for the reception of the bearing-plate B, (see Fig. 4,) which in this instance I form of a semi-tubular shape from a metal blank or malleable casting, and provide it with shoulders B, capable of being closed, forming eyes within which the straps or loops A are mounted. By this arrangement I form a bearing for the rope, by which said rope is prevented from wearing through (No model.)
the straps. In this instance, in forming my halter, I connect one end of the rope to the hitching-ring O, in any usual manner, and then carry said rope to the loop A of the crown-strap and pass it through the same, thus forming the throat-latch D. After passing through the loop A in the crown-piece the rope is passed to theloop A in the noseband, forming the cheek-strap D, and under the jaw or chin, i'ormingthe hitching-strap D",to which the hitching-ring before mentioned is loosely connected. After passing through this ring the rope is carried through the same loops, as on the opposite side, and connected to the ring.
For the purpose of providing a means for re taining the ropes taut, so as to prevent the withdrawal of the animals head from the halter, and to provide a means for ready adjustment, I provide metal clips E, which are capable of being compressed, so as to bind and hold the rope in the desired position.
By providing the loops A with the metal bearing-plates B, said loops being interposed between the shoulders B of said plates, not only is the strap prevented from wearing away by the contact of the rope, but the shoulders on the plate serve to retain said plate within the loops, whereby said loops are stiilened and prevented from curling.
Having described my invention and its op eration, what I claim is 1. The combination of the straps A A, having loops A, the portions 1) D D", with the bearingplate B, having shoulders B,monuted in said loops, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the straps A A, having loops A", provided with bearing-plates, substantially as described, withthe portions D D D and the clips E, mounted on said portions, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM o. sorIAnFEa.
