BREAST-COLLAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,206, dated October 28, 1890.

Be itknown that 1, JOHN STERETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morning Sun, in the county of Louisa and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast-Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in breast-collars more particularly adapted for double sets of harness, but which can also be used in connection with single sets a s well.

The object sought to be accomplished is to produce an exceedingly simple, strong, durable, and neat arrangement of parts, which can be employed with improved results over the constructions previously in use.

With these ends in view myinvention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts,more fullydescribed hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a view of my harness ap plied to adouble-horse team, and Fig. 2 a View of one of the collars detached.

The reference-letter A indicates the breaststrap, to the ends of which are attached the traces, and B the neck-strap, which is buckled at its lower ends to the connecting-pieces O, the latter being provided with loops D at their opposite ends, engaged by rings E. Similar rings F are stitched into the breast strap near the rear ends of the same, and short, round straps G, having suitable loops in their ends, connect these rings and those of the neck-strap.

In the front of the breast-strap, at the center of the same, is arranged a double strap H, which is inserted vertically between the two thicknesses of the breast-strap with its opposite ends projecting beyond the upper and lower edges, respectively, of said strap, and thus forming loops I and J, extending lengthwise with the latter. A round strap K is contained at its center by the upper loop I and connected at its opposite ends to the neckstrap rings E by means of suitable loops, and thus forms a curved strap or bow fitting the under side of the horses neck.

In the under loop J is arranged a dependand buckle R, secured to its opposite end. Thus it will be seen that the strap forms a loop inclosing all the parts atthe center of the front portion of the collar, and the advantages of this arrangement will be apparent. It is neat and compact, and adds greater strength and durability to the collar, for it will be obvious that the weight of the pole will be equally borne by all the parts, as the connecting-strap surrounds them at the center, and no one of the parts will bear the strain, and thus be torn away from the remainder of the collar. Moreover, the parts will remain in proper adjustment, as the looped pole-strap holds them together compactly and then hence prevents their being pulled out of shape. The main advantage of this construction, however, is that the polestrap is not connected to a strap or other device stitched or otherwise attached to the breast-strap, and thus likely to be pulled away from the same; but it surrounds the breaststrap itself and also the under neck-strap, and hence makes an exceedingly strong and stable connection.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a breast-collar, the combination of a breast-strap, an upper neck-strap having rings in its lower ends, short round straps connecting said rings and the rear ends of the breaststrap, an under round neckstrap attached at its end to said rings, a doubled strap stitched between the thicknesses of the breast-strap at the center of the same, and forming loops projecting above andbelow the upper and lower edges, respectively, of the breast-strap, the upper loop containing said rounded strap, and a, martingale-strap supported by said lower loop, all arranged substantially as described.

2. In a breast-collar, the combination of a breaststrap, a neck-strap connected to the rear ends of the latter, a round under neckstrap also connected to the lower ends of said upper neck-strap, a doubled strap stitched 5 between the thicknesses of the breast-strap at the center of the same and forming loops projecting above and below the upper and lower edges, respectively, of said breast-strap, the upper loop containing the round under 10 neck-strap, a martingale-strap supported by said lower loop, and a pole-strap inclosing the breast-strap and both said loops, as and for the purpose described.
