J. F. STEWART.
' KEY HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED'MAR.1'8,1908.
- 905,015. Patented Nov. 24, 1908 Elvweutoz I amm q UNITED I STATES PATENT orrIoE.
JOHN F. STEWART, or WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
No. 905,015. Specification of Letters Patent;
, Application filed March 18, 1908. Serial No. 421,791.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1,. JOHN citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wilkinsburg, in the county of Alleghenyand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve-- ments in Key-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to key. holders, particularly designed for preventing the burglarizing of buildings having doors secured F. STEWART, a
and locked by keys;
The primary object of my invention is, to prevent a person from surreptitiously shifting a key, or removing the same from a lock.
Another object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive key holder that can be easily and quickly applied to a lock of a door for maintaining the 'keyin a fixed position within a lock.
With these and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the'invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to bepresently described and then specifically pended claims. a
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a key holder constructed in -accordance with my invention, the same being illustrated as applied to a key. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the key holder as detached from a key, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of a key holder as engaging'the key, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the key holder.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a door having a lock 2 o a conventional form, this look being used in connection with a-door knob 3 and a door knob shank 4:, the latter being located directly above the key hole 5 of the look. For operating the lock 2 akey 6 is used,this key having a skeleton handle or enlar ement 7 I for facilitating the manipulation of the key..
4 My key holder is constructed of a single piece of wire, one end of which is bent to form a hook 8 adapted to embrace the door knob shank l. The opposite end is bent to form an oblong loop ,9 and this loop is adapted to extend through the skeleton handle or enlargement 7, and prevent its rotation in the lock 2. In completing the loop "9 the end of the piece of wire is bent to encircle an intermediate portion of the Wire, the engagement being suchas to prevent any pointed out in the ap-' HY-HOLDER.
Patented Nov. 24, 19 08.
T relative movement of the sides of'the loop in a direction to decreasethe Width of the nent shape and of predetermined sizefl hen the'ke is positioned as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 o the drawings with the handle or enlargement 7 at right angles to the f key hole 5, it is impossible to withdraw the 5 key from the lock, and in order to maintain the key in this position, key holder is inserted in :"largement. I V When the key is positioned in the key hole with the plane of the axis of the opening of the key extending through the knob shank, the placing of the loop portion of through the key opening places an obstruction in the path of key of such character as to movement of the key absolutely breaking the latter being such pressure exerted in a direction to decrease the Width of the loop; hence the key is held fixedly against movement and any liability of moving the lock-bolt by a manipulation .of the key is prevented.
prevent any the holder loop, so that the loopis formed of permathe loop 9 ofthe rotatlve movement of the whatever, except by. the holder, the form'of.
as to successfully resist It will be of course: understood that this I key holder is. used upon the inner side of a expense and effectively used for preventing the burglarizing of 'a house. applicable to the front doors of a house, but may be used in connection with the various compartments thereof.
I claim as new, is
1.- A key-holder for preventing, movement of akey in a key-hole, formed of a single piece of its ends formed with embrace the shank of a door knob, and. having its other end bent to form'a permanentl closed oblong loop adapted to pass throng an opening in the key, said loop being of predetermlned size and formed to present obstructions against a free movement of the sides of the loop relatively to each other to change the form'of the loop.
2. A key-holder formed of a single piece It is not only the doors ofsaid holder being of Wire having one a hook adapted to mg manufactured at a comparatively small Having now described my invention what of Wire having one of its ends formed with 100p relatively to each other to change the a hook, and having its opposite end bent form of the 100p. 10 around and substantially encircling. and In testimony whereof I afiix my signature closely fitting the wire at an intermediate in the presence of two witnesses.
point in the length of the wire to form an JOHN F. STEWART. oblon loop of predetermined size, the bent Witnesses: encirc ing end forming an obstruction lVlAK H. SnoLovrrz,
against a, free movement of the sides of the I K. H. Burn-11:.
