Description
P. M. LEGERE. PROTECTOR FOR SET SCREWS. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 18, 1 908.
Ratented Nov. 17, 1908.
PATRICK M. LEGERE, OF BERLIN, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
PROTECTOR FDR SET-SCREWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17', 1908.
Application filed June 18, 1908. Serial No. 439,242.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK M. LEGERE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Berlin, in the county of Coos and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Set-Screws; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to set-screw protectors for shafting.
The object of the invention is the provision of a cheap and eflicient device of this character which will cover the set screw so that all danger from the same engaging in the clothing of the operators is prevented.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be readily and easily applied to any type of collar extant.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view, Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device shown attached to a flange and split collar, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring more especially to the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, l represents the shaft and 2 the collar, which is secured upon the shaft by the set-screw 8. In order to protect the clothing of the operators from being caught in the set-screw I provide a device which comprises a band i of flexible and pliable material, which is provided at one end with an elongated loop 5, and adjacent the looped end with an aperture 6, of such formation as to receive the setscrew. The side opposite the set-screw is provided with a double fold 7, in which a loop 8 is secured. In applying the device the set screw 3 is passed through the aperture 6 and the band wound around the collar with its free end passed through the loop 5 and over the nut into engagement with the loop 8. It is then folded back upon itself to lock the device upon the collar.
The device as regards the application shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is substantially the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the exception that the band is provided with two additional apertures 9 and 10 for the reception of the ends of the clamping bolts.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:-
A guard for set screws on revolving bodies comprising a flexible band having an aperture therein adjacent to one end, a loop secured in the end near said aperture, the set screw adapted to enter the aperture in the band and said band adapted to pass entirely around the body so as to overlie the set screw, a double fold formed in said band an equal distance from the aperture with the loop, a second loop secured in said double fold, and a foldformed in the opposite end of the band to engage the second loop and lock the band on the body.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PATRICK M. LEGERE. Witnesses J. F. LIBBY, Tnos. I-I. SAMSON.
