To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS WnsTLY PARL- MER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Levering, in the county of Emmet and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. v
This invention relates to certain improve ments in grinding mechanism, and has re lation more particularly to a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be employed with convenience and facility in differing positions, especially when employed for grinding tools or farm implements.
The invention also has for an object to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the grinding element is rotatably supported by the hand grasps and whereby said element may be caused to rotate independently of the hand grasps.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement of the several parts of my improved grinding mechanism whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is ren dered simpler, less expensive and more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of a grinding mechanism constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a casing of predetermined configuration and dimensions having arranged therein a shaft 2, such shaft projecting exteriorly of the casing and having suitably connected to its projected portion a crank 3 and a drive pulley 4, whereby the shaft 2 may be axially rotated either manually' or by power.
Within the casing 1 the shaft 2 has fixed thereto a gear wheel 5 of predetermined diameter in mesh with a pinion 6 fixed to a counter shaft 7 operatively supported by the casing 1, and also fixed to the counter shaft 7 is a gear 8 of materially greater diameter than the pinion 6, and in mesh with a pinion fixed'to a second counter shaft 10 supported by the casing 1 and projecting exteriorly thereof.
Suitably connected with the projected portion of the shaft 10 is the extremity of a flexible shaft 11 of predetermined length, and which has its opposite extremity suit ably engaged as at 12 with the extremity of the rigid shaft 14:. Adjacent one extremity the shaft 141 has integrally produced therewith a collar 15 provided at its inner face with the annular shoulder 16 adapted to be projected within the extremity of a tubular hand grasp or sleeve 17 the opposite extremity whereof being adapted to receive a similar shoulder 18 formed on the inner face of the collar 19 threaded upon the shaft 14.
Substantially one-half of the shaft 14 is of reduced diameter, as indicated at 20, such reduced portion having its periphery threaded throughout its length and adjustably engaged upon such threaded portion 20 is a collar 21 coacting with the collar 19 and adapted to clamp therebetween an emery wheel 22 or other grinding element, and in order to maintain the collar 21 in clamping engagement with the element 22 I employ the set collar 23 adapted to engage the collar 21 in the manner which is believed to be self evident, and said set collar 23 is provided at its free face with the annular shoulder 24 adapted to be projected within the extremity of a second tubular hand grasp or sleeve 25, the opposite end whereof is adapted to receive a similar shoulder 25 carried by a collar 27 in threaded engagement with the reduced portion. 20 of the rigid shaft 14, said collar 27 having coacting therewith the set or look nut 28 whereby the same is effectively maintained in operativeposition. The collar 21 is provided at its axial center with the inwardly disposed annular flange 29, the maximum diameter of which is substantially equal to that of the enlarged portion of the shaft 14,
and it is to be observed that the grinding element 22 is provided with an axial bore 30 into which said annular flange 29 and the adjacent extremity of the enlarged portion of the shaft 14 projects whereby it is assured that the grinding element 22 is maintained in an efiective position. By this arrangement it will be readily perceived that upon operation of the shaft 2 of the casing, l, the shaft lei will be caused to rotate with proper speed, and that the tubular hand grasps 17 and 25 will permit the shaft 14 to be properly manipulated and said shaft 14 will rotate independently thereof, as is believed to be clearly apparentto those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains.
It is to be understood that the casing 1 may be anchored in operative position in any manner as will best serve the requirements of practice, and for this reason I do not wish to set forth in detail any particular arrangement.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a grinding mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly wellada-pted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modificatlon Without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several partsherein shown in carrying out my invention in practice;
I- claim:
A device of the character described, comprising. a shaft, one portion thereof being reduced,the periphery of such reduced portion being threaded, a collar carried by the larger end of the shaft, a second collar end- Wise adjustable upon said larger end of the shaft, each of said collars being provided with inwardly disposed shoulders, a tubular hand grasp surrounding the larger portion of the shaft, the shoulders of the collars being projected within opposite ends of the tubular hand grasp, a collar adjustably mounted upon the reduced portion of the shaft, a grinding element surrounding the shaft interposed between the collar of the reduced portion of the shaft and the adjacent collar of the larger portion thereof, said grinding element being provided with an axial bore into which the inner extremity of the enlarged portion of the shaft is adapted to project and the coacting collar on the reduced portion of the shaft being provided with an annular shoulder projecting within the bore of the grinding element, a set collar threaded upon the reduced portion of the shaft coacting with the first named collar thereon for holding the same in clamping engagement with the grinding element, a second collar in threaded engagement upon the reduced portion of the shaft, said second collar and set collar being provided wlth inwardly disposed shoulders, a tubular hand grasp surrounding the reduced portion of the shaft and interposed between said two last named collars, said collars being provided with inwardly disposed shoulders projecting within the opposite open ends of the tubular hand grasp.
