application tiled an i ran. semi at. errata.
Be 1t known that l, Woornn L. BA UMANN, a citizen of the United States,- residin at in the county of Fresno and tate ifornia, have invented a new anduseful Pawl-and-Ratchet Device, or which the llowing is a specification. T. The resent invention appertains to a line ex an ing device, and relate lar y to an actuating mechanism for fiueexpanders. a
it is the object of the presentinvention to provide an appliance of the nature indicated, tor actuating a common roller flue expander, in either direction, and for enabling the eximpairing or injuring the,
' shocks.
he present inveiitionalso comprehends the provision'oi an appliance of the eharacter s ecified, which will be compai'atively simp 'e, compact and inexpensive in construction, as well as bein simple, convenient, substantial, serviceabe and eficient in actuating mocha-1 i s use.
With the foregoing and other-objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in th bination and the details of construction scribed and claimed, it bein understood that changes in the precise em odiment I can be made in the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the s irit of the invention. he invention has een illustrated in its preferredembodiment drawing, wherein:.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal-section of the improved appliance, portions hein broken is a cross section the device, taken on the line 2- 2 of Fig. 1.
carrying out the there is provided a spind or pin 1, having the tapered mandrel portion 2 at one end,
. and upon which an ordinary roller flue expander may be mounted. arious' flue expanders ma be employed upon the mandrel 2, and for t is reason a detailed illustration I and description hereof is not deemed necesof the reSent apits free end,
The sh ft or The bod ortion of the 1 is providlled s more partied,
1. is preferably provided with a retaining collar 4 at its other or outer end.
' I spindle or shaft with longitudinal feathers or splines 5, and collars 6 are mounted upon the splndle or pin 1 and seat against the ends of the feathers 5, the collars 6 being preterably locked in place-by means of cotter pins 7.. or the like. IA ratchet wheel 8. having square 'slidably mountedupon the body portion of the spindle or pin 1, and engages the feathers 5 in order that the spindle and ratchet wheel may. be restrained from rotatin with respect to one another, although t e ratchet W oral and spindle may reciprocate or slide teeth is I e com arrangement of parts and in hereinafter de-.
of the 1present invention,
relative to one. another. The ratchet wheel I its sides with bosses 9., and coiled wire compression springs surroundmg the spindle 1, are seated hetween the collars 6 and the bosses'aot the ratchet wheel to yieldingly hold the' ratchet wheel intermediatethe collars. 6. I
The means for rotating the ratchet wheel 8 embodies an annulus or annular body liencircling the ratchet wheel 8, the o enin 12 of the body 11 receiving the rate et w eel loosely and annular plates or flat rings 13 heing secured'to the sides or faces of the body 11 by means of screws or other securing members 14:, and loosely embracing the bosses 9 of the ratchet wheel. The inner edge portions of the retaining plates or rings 13 project beyond the edges of the opening 12 of the body, and overlap the faces or sides of the ratchet wheel, to retain the ratchet wheelwithin the body 11, and to permit the ratchet wheel'anol b dy to rotate with respect to one another. The eriphery of the ratchet wheel 8 being 0011211611 or housed within the body 11 and retainin plates 13, will cause the body andratchet w longitudinally as a uni p The body or annulus 11 is provided with a radial extension or boss 15, and a radial bore .16 extends through the projection 15 vto the opening 12 of the withinthe bore 16 is a pawl or dog circular cross 'section,'the same being posed slidably and rotatably within the 16, and havlng an outwardl stem 18 slidable through a ringer collar 19 threaded or otherwise engaged into the mouth of the bore 16. The stem 18 is proh y PI'OJBClZHIg the expander to be tapvidedwith ahandle or finger "piece at its tpecitlmtion o1 hettera ratenti p m ma @lqgpfg 2% 119114 via eel to shift v ody. Mounted I dis- , arranged to force the thereby, to .yield in either jars upon the ratchet wheel and parts cartated, to rotatethe outer extremity, and a coiled wire compression spring 21 surrounds the stem 18 within the bore 16 and has its terminals seated against the collar 19 and the pawl or dog 17, and yieldingly presses the pawl or dog inwardly against the periphery of the ratchet wheel. The inner end of the pawl 17 is inclined or beveled, as at 22, and one side is flattened, as at 23, to present a beveled tooth for engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel. The shoulder or flat side 23 of the pawl or dog is arranged to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel with the body 11, while the beveled face 22 of the pawl or dog, is pawl or dog outwardly the spring 21, when against the tensionof with respect the body 11 is swung properly, to the ratchet wheel.
As a means for rotating or oscillating the body 11, the same is provided with a radial socketed projection 24 adjacent the rojection or boss 15, and'threadedly receivmg the inner end of a handle or lever 25, which may he ofany suitable length according to the purchasedesired upon the spindle or shaltl. y
The several component parts of the apparatus may be readily assembled as will be obvious from the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawing, and may also be readily taken apart for the purpose of cleaning, repair or replacement. The roller flue expander (not shown) may be readily aplied upon the mandrel 2, when the retainmg nut 3 is removed, in order that the expander may be driven into the flue or tube, with the mandrel 2,, the body and outer end portion of the spindle or pin 1 projecting from the end of the flue. Attention is directed to the fact, that as the spindle or pin 1 is being driven, the s rings 10 will permit the ratchet wheel an parts carried direction, to avoid ried thereby, inasmuch as the springs 10 tend to absorb the shocks.
The spindle or pin 1 may be forcibly roflue expander when desired by oscillating the handle or lever 25,
which will cause the pawl or dog 17 to' althe ratchet wheel, to turn.
- cotiperable with my own, I have in the presence ternately grip and ride idly back over the ratchet wheel, in order that the handle or lever 25 will impart anintermittent rotary movement to the spindle or pin 1. When the pawl or dog 17 is-arranged as illustrated in Fig. 2, the oscillation of; the handle or lever will cause the ratchet wheel to be rotated in a counter clockwise direction, and if it is desired to rotate the ratchet wheel and spindle .in a clockwise direction, this may be readily accomplished by pulling the pawl 17 out of engagement with the ratchet wheel through the medium of the\hand piece 20, and then angle of 180 degrees an so as to reverse the,
'beveledface 22 and shoulder 23 of the pawl.
It will thus be obvious from the foregoing, taken in connectionwith the drawing, that the present appliance may and efficiently employed for both driving and rotating a flue expander, the present appliance being of advantage in several respec ts, as will be apparentfrom the foregoing without further comment.
,Having thus described the invention, what is claimed'as new is z-- 1. In a device of the character described, a spindle, a ratchet wheel feathered thereon, shock springs mounted upon the spindle and holding the ratchet wheel therebetween, a body rotatahly mounted upon the ratchet wheel, and a pawl the ratchet wheel.
2. 'In'a device of th'ehch racter described, a spindle having a feather-at one portion, collars mounted upon-the ends of the ,feather, a ratchet wheel slidable upon the spindle between the collars and engaging the feather, springs disposed between the ratchet wheel and collars, a body rotatably mounted upon the ble with the ratchet wheel. 1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as hereto afiixed my signature of two witnesses.
