G. F. CROMPTON VALVE GRINDING MECHANISM Filed Feb. 15. 192e lll/1111111 Patented Dec. 10, 1929 'le UNETED STATES PATENT foi-FICE l GEORGE F. CROMPTON, OF ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS i vALvE-eRrNDING MEcHANisivr f Application led February 15, '1928. Serial No. 254,587.
My invention has reference to a valve grinding mechanism, and has for its purpose,
mechanism may be changedwith relation thereto.
Another object thereof is to provide a variable speed gearing, by means of which the grinding mechanism can be adapted for use with electric drills of diering speeds. An'` attachment can thereby be made with a high speed drill motor by means of which the speed will be reduced in the grinding mechanism, so that vthe tool will not be operated at an excessive rate of speed, and when it is desired to use the device with a drill apparatus of lower speed, another connection can be made by means of which the Speed of the tool will be mad-e to conform with that of the drill mechanism. f
Another purpose of the invention is to provide means for converting the rotary movement of an electric drill to a reciprocating movement in the valve grinding tool.
The particular construction, arrangement, and operation of the invention will be more fully understood from the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which;
Fig. 1 shows .an Aelectric drill apparatus and valve grinding mechanism adapted for use therewith.
Fig. 2 is a v-ertical section through the casing 8, with parts therein shown in full lines. v
end-piece .4. of flexible shaft 5, the other' end 6 of said shaft being adapted for con- ,nectioii with the mechanism vofthe valvegrinding tool, as hereinafter jset forth. y y
"8 indicates a casing, closed by a plate 9,'.55
provided on vits upper face with a vpair of bearings 10 and 11, vin which are rotatably held shafts 12 and 13, on which areffixed in- Vtermeshing gear-wheels ,1-1 and 15, of varying diameters. The shaft 12 has an eXten- 60 sion 16v for connection with the end-piece 7 of the shaft 5, said parts being fixed together by a set-screw 17 in thecoupling 7, bearing against a flattened face of the shaft. Slidable on the end of the-shaft 5 is a sleeveV 65 18, attachable to the bearing 10 by set-screws 19. l/Vhen thus attached an erratic action of the end of the shaft is prevented`,psuch as might tend to disconnect such shaft from the shaft 12. At thesametime the sleeve 18.
vserves Vas a handle, to assist in steadying the tool while in operation,V
The shaft 13 is also provided with an extension 20, and for carrying out' the purposes of the invention the end of the shaft 5 can be 75 connected with either the shaft 12 or shaft 13, at Ywill. l/Vhen the shaftV 5 is connected with the shaft 13 the sleeve 18 is attachedv to the bearing 11, and to disconnect said shaft from either the shaft 12 or 13 the sleeve 18 so is first loosened and raised until the screw 17 is exposed, whereupon said screw may be loosened and the parts separated.
Projected downwardly from the casing 8 is a bearing 21, in which is rotatablyheld a spindle 22, on the end of which is a tool 23,
for engagement with the valve of an engine,
as indicatedin broken lines at 24. Fixed to the upper end of the spindle 2,2 is a crank-A arm 25, connected by a pitman 26 with ya. 9o relatively short crank-armf27 on the lower end of the shaft 13. When the shaft 13 is being rotated a similar movement is given to the crank 27, which movement is imparted to the arm 25 to give ak reciprocating move- 95 ment thereto, and to the spindle 22. y
By the vadaptation of the device for connection with and operation by a commercial form of electric motor, commonly known as an electric drill, the necessity of including a motor as a part of the tool is eliminated, with a corresponding reduction of cost of production. The motors of the kind mentioned are commonly of tWo different speed facilities, one of Which is. much more rapid than the other, and not suited for driving a valve grinding mechanism except yvith aw considerablerednctioniofithe speed."
