4SIMON G. PETTERSON, OF PINE BLUFF, ARKANSAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application :tiled October 30, 1907. Serial No. 399,880.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON G. PETTERsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in4 Hoop-Rollers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to devices for trundling or rollin and guiding hoops.
It is the object o the invention to provide a hoop roller so constructed that a child can run at theside of the. -hoop as though batting it along in the usual way, and have the trundling means guide and-control it without the exercise of great skill.
It is also the object of the invention to provide a trundling device so constructed that the child need not run behind in the path of the hoop so that if the latter should fall the child may not fall over it and be hurt. p
To the foregoing ends the invention consists of a hoop-roller comprising a length of stiff` wire bent to form an eye or loop 1n the end and another a short distance therefrom positioned approximately in line therewith the connections between the two eyes consisting of portions of len ths of wire, and the latter beine bent together below the secondmentionedlloop to form a handle or the support for ahandle.
The drawin hereto annexed shows an embodiment of t e invention, and constitutes, with the reference characters marked-thereon, a part of this specification, the said drawing being a side view of the invention inthe position it will occupy when applied to use. In carrying out my invention I provide a hoop of round or it may be flattened wire suitable for a child to roll about in its play. Instead of batting the hoop about, a thing which requires considerable skill, my trundling devlce consists of a roller or trundler comprisin ,a handle 2 extending laterally from the oop 1 and having an eye or loop 3 at the endof the handle and another loo or eye 4 extending forward of the eye 3 ang in substantial alinement therewith, the two eyes being joined by connecting means 5 on the side of the hoop opposite to that vfrom which the handle extends.
In making this trundling device I prefer to form it from a length of sti wire bending it so as to form the eye Land then doubling the extended parts 6 upon themselves so as to constitute the connecting means 5 Abetween the eye I and the-eye 3 `which is formed by bending the lengths of wire in opposite directions and at substantially a right angle to the connecting part 5. After forming the eye 3 as stated the balance of the wlre is doubled upon itself and extends outwardly at substantially a right angle to the hoop when standing upright and is made to constitute the handle of the trundling device by which the hoop is manipulated. If desired the wire handle specified may have a wooden handle placed thereon as' is indicated in dotted lines iu the figure. I
With the invention specified a child not skilled in the rolling of a hoop can readily learn to trundle'a hoop about in a way closely simulating that of batting on its sides instead of pushmg it from the rear with Patented Nov. 17,1908.
danger of falling over it if the hoop should fall. Aside from this the manner of constructing the trundlingdevice herein described, it is one that makes sure of running the hoop easily without danger of the child falling over it, it being understood that the eyes or loops throu h which the hoop passes are much larger t an the diameter of the hoop itself.
A rolling device for hoops composed of a single piece of wire bent upon itself intermediate its ends and the sldes closely engaged exce t at two points where the sides are disten ed into eyes spaced apart2 the terminals of said sides adapted to receive a handle and with one of sald eyes in alinement with the longitudinal lane of the handle receiving portlon and t e other of said eyes inclined to the longitudinal plane of the handle receiving portion, sald eyes adapted to be permanently engaged with a hoop.
.In testimony whereof, a X my signature,
in presence oftwo witnesses.
