PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN COLE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HOOP GUIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 22, 1922.
Application filed August 20, 1921. Serial No. 493,869.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN Come, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoop Guides, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and more particularly to a rolling hoop guide to facilitate the skillful propulsion and manipulation of the same, when either walking or running.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a detachable guide for rolling hoops having a plurality of rollers or idlers held in spaced relation so as to engage the outer periphery of the hoop and properly maintain the same in its true course by the child or operator.
Another and very important object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved toy designed particularly for immature children, and one in which the parts are extremely simple in construction, easily assembled, rigid and durable, highly efficient in operation, practical and capable of being manufactured at a very low cost whereby its commerical possibilities are greatly enhanced.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification. with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing in the drawings, but may be changed. and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.
I attain these objects and others in the accompanying drawings wherein a Figure 1 is a side view showing the invention as applied to a rolling hoop,
Figure 2 is a plan. and
Figure 3 is a detail view.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like parts designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the device comprises a handle 5 which is provided with a slot or recess 6 in one end thereof for receiving a yoke designated at 7, the arms 8, 9 of which are outwardly curved being preferably made of stout wire and terminate in eyes 10, 11. Between the respective eyes 10, 11, is positioned a pin 12 which receives an idler or roller 13 therebet-ween which is adapted to frictionally contact and engage with the outer periphery of the rolling hoop shown in dotted lines and. designated by numeral 14:. Connected to the respective pins 12 of the arms 8, 9, I have provided curved links 15, 16, the eyes 17 of which are disposed on each side of the idler or roller, the opposite ends of the said curved links 15, 16 also terminating in eyes 18, 19 which receive a pin 20 the same being held in position by a cotter pin 21 whereby the rolling hoop may be properly maintained in its position when being manipulated either walking or running.
From the above construction it will be readily seen that by simply inserting the pins 20 through the eyes of the curved arms 15, 16 and securing the same by the cotter pin 21 that the toy may be easily and conveniently attached to any style or type of rolling hoop or if so desired form a part thereof as the commercial article. The curved arm 15,
16 of course prevents the hoop from rolling out of its true course when the device is held in the hand. of a child. and thus the toy becomes a very novel and entertaining object for children as above set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated my invention embodied in one form by way of example, and which in practice has been found to be highlv satisfactory in obtaining the desired results. It will be obvious however that other embodiments may be adopted, and that various changes in the details of construction may be resorted to by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It is furthermore understood that the invention is not necessarily limited or restricted to the precise elements shown except in so far as such limitations are specified in the subiect matter being claimed.
Having shown and described my invention What I now claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United eyes, curved arms also attached to said pin,
States, is eyes formed on the ends of said curved 10 A hoop manipulating device or guide comarms and removable pins within the ends prising-a handle, a double-yoke member se- 01 said curved arms for maintaining; a hoop 5 cured to the' handle, the ends of each of in rolling position; i s
said yoke members terminating in eyes, a- In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature pin and an idler or roller earried byyeac hhereto. q Y
of the said yokes and secured Within the JOHN COLE.
