To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, llowann RYAN and OSCAR Jonnson, citizens o the "United States, residing at Chicago, county t Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Locomotive-Tenders, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to locomotive tenders and the object of our invention is to provide a tender of such im' inoved construction that the coal in the coal pit may be moved for wardly as required to the front end of the tender where it is more readily accessible.
A further object of our invention is to provide a tender of the character mentioned having a coal pit of large capacity.

"iVith these objects in view our invention consists generally in a tender comprising a water tank substantially co-extensive'with the length and breadth thereof and having an inclined top portion near its forward end, in combination with a coal pit arranged above said tank and comprising a movable inclined bottom, side and back walls rigidly liked to said bottom. and movable therewith, the front of the pit being defined by the angular-1y disposed walls of the front water legs of the water tank rising from the front end of said tank, and in a fluid pressure device for operating the movable portion of the pit.
()ur invention further consists in a tender comprising a water tank as before mentioned, and a coal pit having movable bottom, the forward portion of said bottom being angularly disposed or forwardly inclined and the rear portion being snbstantially horizontal when in normal position and overhanging the rear portion of the tank.
Our invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will behereinafter i'nlly described and particularly pointed out in. the claims. Uni invention will be more readily under stood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and-in which,

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the water tank or" the tender which extends the full length and width thereof and constitutes the body portion. The forward end, 2 of the tank is quite shallow, the top, 3 thereof forming the floor at the forward end of the tender. From the portion, 3, which extends a short way rcawrardl y forming the extreme forward end of the bottom of the coal pit, the top of the tank inclines upwardly as at i: to the top plate,
Rising rrom the forward end, 2 0f the tank are the water legs, 6, having the in- 'ardly and forwardly inclined walls 7 forming the front of the coal pit. The coal pit is arranged abovethe Wlttll tank and is the full width of the tenderf' lhe coal pit is defined by a movable bottom, 8, the sides, 9 rigidly fixed thereto and the back or rear wall, 10. The bottom comprises a forwardly inclined portion, 8', substantially co-extensive with the inclined portion, -l of the top of the water tank, and a substantially horizontal portion, 8 which extends rearwardly, overhanging the top, 5 of the tank. The lower lot-ward edge of the bottom is hingedly connected to the tank at the juncture between the portions, 3 and i of the top, 11 indicating the hin e. The bottom is preferably strengthened by a plurality of angles or T irons, l2 and the back is strengthened by a brace, 13 riveted thereto and to the portion 8 of the bottom. The sides, 9 slightly overhang the sides of the tank in order that their forward ends will pass the outside walls of the water logs.

This comprises an angle or T iron having the vertical portions, 15, which are riveted to the for 'ard edges, and the transverse portion, 16 which extends above the water legs, 6, the upper ends or tops 0f the water legs being curved as at 17 to permit the portion, 16 of the brace to swing freely above it.
Within the tank, 1 is arranged a cylinder, 17 having a piston, 18 which is actuated by fluid pressure either steam or compressed air from the engine, and controlled either from the cab of the engine or the front of the tender or both. The cylinder, 17 is preferably of the same height as the rear portion of the tank and is provided with the top and base flanges, 19 and 20 respectively which are riveted to the top and bottom plates of thetank. It is obvious that the 21 is formed T shaped, the horizontal portion, 23 extending transversely of the pit.

The top of the cylinder is slightly enlarged and is provided with a plurality of grooves, 25, which permits the steam or compressed air to escape by the piston after the pit is raised to its full height. By this construction the piston is never forced out of the cylinder, the grooves 25 being proportioned to carry olf all pressure admitted through the pipe, 22.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.. A locomotive tender comprising a water tank substantially co extensive with the length and breadth thereof and having an inclined intermediate top portion in combination with a coal pit arranged above said tank and'comprising a movable bottom, side and back walls rigidly fixed to said bottom and movable therewith and'fluid pressure Y means for raising said pit as and for the purpose specified.
2. A locomotive tender comprising a water tank substantially coextensive with the length and breadth thereof andhaving a pair of water legs rising from the forward end thereof, in combination with a coal pit comprising a movable bottom hingedly connected to the topiof said tank to the rear of 1 said water legs, sides-fixed to said bottom and overhanging the sides of said tank and adapted to swing in a plane parallel with the outer faces of said water legs and fluid ressure means for raising said plt, substantially 1 as described.
3. A locomotive tender comprising a water tank substantially coextensive with the I length and breadth thereof and having a pair of water legs rising from its forward end in combination with a coal pit comprising a movable bottom hingedly'connected to the top of said tank to the rear of said water legs, sides fixed to said bottom and having their forward ends extending on the outside of said water legs, a brace extending over said water legs and connecting the forward ends of said sides and fluid pressure means for raising said pit, substantially as described. 4

A locomotive tender comprising a water tank substantially co extensive with the length and-breadth thereof and having a for wardly inclined intermediate top' portion, in combination with a coal pit arranged above said tank and comprising a bottom having an inclined portion substantially co-extensive withthe inclined top portion of the tank and a substantially horizontal portion overhanging the upper rear portion of the tank and sides and a back fixed to said bottom and fluid pressure means for raising said pit substantially as described.
5. A locomotive tender comprising a water tank substantially co extensive with the ;length and breadth thereof, in combination with a coal pit having a movable bottom hingedly arranged above said tank,-a cylinder arranged within said tank and having a piston suitably connected to the bottom of said pit and means for supplyin fluidpressure to said cylinder, substantially as described. g
6. A locomotive tender comprising a water tank forming the body thereof in combination with a coal pit hingedlyarranged above said tank,'a cylinder arranged within said tank and extending from the top to the bot- .tom thereof, a piston in said cylinder and suitably connected to said pit and means for supplying fluid pressure to said cylinder,
substantially as described.
