UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. COLLIN, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COAL-CAR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 253,?85, dated February 14, 1882.
Application filed June 23,1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J.B.O0LLIN, of Altoona, county of Blair, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Goal-Oars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists mainly in the combination, with properframe-work supported upon wheels, of a car-body of special construction, as will be fully described hereinafter..
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional elevationot' my improved car; Fig. 2, a plan view; Fig. 3, a front end elevation, and Fig. 4 a rear end elevation, of the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make my improved car, I will proceed to describe fully the construction of the same.
A A, Figs. 1 and 4, represent a system of frame-work rising from the journals B B of the wheels, by means of which the car-body is properly supported.
0 represents the bottom plate of the car, which is rectangular in form, as shown in Fig. 2, and is supported in an inclined position by the frame-work, as shown.
0 0 represent the side plates, which are triangular in form, as shown in Fig. 1.
0 represents the front plate, of rectangular form, by means of which the side plates are united together to complete the car body proper.
1) represents a door, adapted in size'and shape to fill the opening in the front end of the car-body, which is properly hingedat its upper edge to the lower edge of the plate 0, as shown.
E represents a lever, provided at one end with a hook, 0, adapted, when in the proper position, to secure the door against opening, as shown in Fig. 1.
0 represents a chain attached to the rear end of the lever, which passes over proper pulleys, e and 6 into convenient position for manipulation when it is desired to actuate the lever to release the door.
The lever, it will be observed, is so balanced as to return automatically to its normal position after having been moved to release the door.
F F represent guide-boards, by means of which the coal in its discharge from the car is properly directed.
The manner of using the car is substantially as follows: Having been moved to the proper place, it is filled in any suitable manner, either by a discharge from above or by hand from below, accordingto the circumstances ofthe case. It is then moved to the proper point and lifted by any proper hoisting mechanism into position to discharge its contents into the tender of a locomotive. By simply pulling the chain c the lever E is actuated to release the door, when, of course, the contents of the car, being no longer supported thereby, are discharged into the receptacle below.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the coal-car having the inclined bottom 0 and guide-boards F F, the
upwardly-swinging door D and the catch-lever E, as describe This specification signed and witnessed this 20th day of June, 188
