JAMES M. HARRISON AND LUTHER NELSON W'HITE, OF COLUMBIA CITY,
INDIANA; SAID lVI-IITE ASSIGNOR TO SAI'D HARRISON.
CAR=COUPLHNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 310,511, dated January 6, 1885. Application filed August 4, 1881. (X model.)
To CLZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J nuns M. HARRISON and LUTHER N. WHITE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Columbia City, in the county of Whitley and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-0ouplings; and we do hereby declare that the following is a fu1l,clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable In others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our im- 1 proved car-coupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line at so in Fig. 2. Fig. 4.- is a front View of a car equipped with our improved coup- 2o ling, and Fig. 5 is a side view of the same.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to that class of can couplings which are arranged to be operated automatically when the cars come together; and it has for its object to provide a device which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
To this end it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In.the drawings, A designates the draw- 3 5 head of our improved car-coupling,which con sists, principally, of the side pieces, B B, which are suitably braced and connected so as to form a longitudinal mouth or recess, 0.
I) is the coupling-hook, which is mounted 4o pivotally upon a pin, E, secured transversely in the mouth of the draw-head. The front end of the shank of the said hook is beveled on its upper side, and the hook proper, which extends in a downward direction from the said 5 shank, is likewise beveled, so that it shall readily engage the coupling link or bail of the next .car. The side of the shank of the coupling-hook is provided with a handle or arm extending in an upward direction to the top or platform of the ear, and by means of which the said coupling-hook may be conveniently manipulated without any necessity of the operator going between the cars.
F designates the link or bail, which extends some distance in front of the draw-head below the coupling-hook, which, when not in use, rests upon the said bail. The latter may be constructed of an iron rod bent to the proper shape, and bent around the projecting ends of the transverse pin upon which the couplinghook is pivoted, thence in a forward and downward direction, and around the pins G G, whereby'the said link or bail is effectively se cured in its working position.
The side bars, 13 B, which constitute the drawhead proper, may extend under the entire length of the car and form part of the supports for the body of the same. I11 this case the pins E at either end of the draw/headmay be connected by longitudinal bars or braces H, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
I is a transverse shaft, mounted between the sides of the draw-head some distance above and in rear of the pivoting-point of the couplingh ook. The said shaft carries a lip or flange, J adapted to bear or press upon the rear end of the coupling-hook, the front end of which may thus be raised and held out of operative position. The outer end of the shaft I is provided with a lever or angle, K, by means of which it may be conveniently manipulated.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When two cars are to be coupled, the coupling-hook of one of the cars is raised or lifted, as described, so that when the cars come together the coupling-hook of thesecond car will engage the link or bail of the first one, and thus effect the coupling. It will be seen at once that this operation is entirely automatic, and that under no circumstances can the cars fail to become connected. The coupling throughout the train is continuous and 5 solid. If, while the train is moving, any one of the couplings should break or getout of order, the coupling of the next car is ready to take the place of the one which has been Uncoupling may be effected whenbroken.
ever desired by means of the handle or rod attached to the coupling-hook, as above described.
This invention is simple and inexpensive, and it maybe readily attached to cars of ordinary construction.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a car-coupling, the combination, with a draw-head consisting of suitably-connected side pieces, of a coupling-hook pivoted between the same upon a pin which is provided with projecting ends, and a link or bail extending in front of the said draw-head, and having its ends bent around the projecting ends of the pivoting-pin,.and thence downwardly and forwardly and around suitablyarranged laterally-projecting pins or studs, substantially as set forth.
2. In aear-coupling, the combination of the draw-head, alink or bail projecting forwardly from the same, a pivoted coupling-hook, and a shaft pivoted transversely above and in rear of the pivoting-point of the couplinghook, and having a lip or flange adapted to bear against the latter, and provided at its outer end with an operating lever or handle, substantially as set forth.
3. In a car-coupling, the herein-described draw-head, consisting of side pieces extending from one end of the car to the other, couplinghooks pivoted in the said draw-head upon pins which extend beyond the sides of the drawhead, the links or bails extending in front of 35 JAMES M.
