Description

UNITED STATES PATENT fEEIoE.
CHARLES F. WILKINSON, BEUBEN MOCHAMER, JACOB B. ZIEGLER, AND CHARLES SNYDER, OF LATIMER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,290, dated July 21,1874; application filed June 6, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES F. WILKIN- soN, REUBEN MooHAMEEJAcoB B. ZIEGLEE, and CHARLES SNYDER, of Latimer, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and Improved Car-Coupling, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved automatic car-coupling, and Fig. 2 a top view ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention relates to an improved selfacting car-coupling for mining, freight, and passenger cars, which couples readily with cars having the common pin-and-link coupling, and is of simple and strong construction. Our invention consists of a draw-hook with inclined front part, fitted rigidly to the car-frame, and set into a recessed bumperframe, in connection with a link-shaped clevis pivoted to the hook, and a curved latch-piece closing over the end of the same.
In the drawing', A represents the drawhook, which is applied firmly in any approved manner to the bottom frame of the car. The hook A has an inclined and curved front edge, for admitting the ready sliding up of the clevis or coupling-link B, which is broader at the front end, and pivoted, by a cross-pin, a, to the rearpart of the hook. Abumpertrame,C,eX tends around thelower part and at both sides of the draw-hook A, and is suitably recessed, and curved at the sides, for guidingl the link vB toward the hook. rlhe side recesses b of bumperfrarne C serve to support the link in horizontal position for coupling. A curved latchpiece, 1), is pivoted to shoulders d of the car end, and anged to t over the upper end of the hook. Its lower end is curved to project forward off the hook, and serves the double purpose of assisting' the link in passing over the hook for coupling, and of supporting the link thereon for uncoupling the cars.
The coupling connects readily cars of different heights, the link of the lower car being then brought into use. It slides, on the approach of the cars, over the hook, and drops into the recess back ofthe hook, forming thereby the intimate coupling of the cars. For uncoupling, the link is swung up, and taken out of the hook, and the drop-latch being then placed into inclined position on the outer side of the latter, ready for the detaching of the cars Without any chance of recoupling.
Having thus tdescribed our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The automatic carcoupling consisting' of draw-hook A, set into recessed bumper-frame C, pivoted coupling-link B, and drop-latch D, fitting over the end ofthe hook, all constructed to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
