Description

FREDERICK A. LANGE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WASHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Application filed April 21, 1908. Serial No. 428,457.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. LANGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Va-shers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to washers or clothes pounders used for washing clothes and the object of my invention, is to provide an improved washer which will violently agitate the water to more quickly and thoroughly cleanse the clothes than those now in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
\Vith these objects in view my invention consists generally in a washer having a large water receiving chamber and in means for permitting the water to enter said chamber as the washer passes downwardly into the washing fluid and to retain the same therein until the washer is above the surface of the washing fluid from whence the contained water will drop suddenly and violently.
My invention further consists in a washer comprising a conical or inverted funnel shaped member having a broad lower face to engage the clothes and a water chamber in combination with an air duct leading upwardly from said chamber, and a valve controlling said duct, the valve opening as the washer descends to permit the washing fluid to enter the chamber and closing as the washer rises, to retain the fluid in the chamber until the washer is above the surface of the fluid.
My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My invention will be more readily under,- stood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a washer embodying my invention in its present preferred form, and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.
The washer comprises the conical outer member 1 having the cylindrical stem or handle 2 which is preferably tubular and secured thereto. Arranged within the member 1 is a cylindrical member 3 of less diameter and forming a water receiving chamber 4;.
The chamber 4 is open at the bottom and closed at the top by the plate 5 preferably formed integrally therewith. The lower edge of the cylinder 3 is outwardly flared or flanged at 6 and extending from the flange 6, that is the lower edge of the cylinder, to the lower edge of the member 1, is an annular member or plate 7 This is preferably slightly conical bringing the lower edge 6 of the water receiving chamber above the level of the lower edge of the member 1, increasing the capacity of the device. The outer edge of the member 7 is seamed to the lower edge 8 of the member 1 at 9. This forms a well rounded lower edge 10 to engage the clothes.
Extending from the upper wall 5 of the chamber 4 is a valved tube 11. This is preferably arranged at a slight angle passing through the wall of the member 1 slightly below the portion 2.
12 indicates a flapped valve pivotally connected at 13 upon the outer face of the member l and adapted when in normal position, to close the outer end 14 of the tube 11.
As the device passes downwardly into the water or washing fluid, the water rises in the chamber 4:, the valve 12 readily opening and permitting the escape of the air. As the device rises the valve closes and retains the water in the chamber until the lower edge 10 is above the level of the washing fluid when the water is suddenly dropped causing violent agitation of the washing fluid and quickly cleansing the clothes.
Having described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A washer comprising a conical member having a suitable handle in combination with a cylindrical member arranged therein, said cylindrical member being open at the bottom and closed at the top, an annular plate connecting the lower edges of said conical member and said cylindrical member, a passageway leading from the upper end of said cylindrical member and a valve controlling said passageway, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK A. LANGE.
