REFINING OILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,213, dated March 31, 1891.
Application filed August 19, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, JOHN D. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Adams and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Oil- Purifier, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to the treatment of oils, and more especially to the refining or cleansing thereof by passing the same through water or through some other liquid of greater specificgravity than the oil.
The object of the invention is to effect this cleansing of the oil in a very economical and yet rapid manner; and to this end the invention consists of a device for the purpose, preferably constructed in the mannerhereinafter more fully described, and as illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my refinin g apparatus complete. Referring to the said drawings, the letter T designates a tank, and the letter R a reservoir adapted to fit into the upper end of the tank, and closed in turn at its upper end by the removable cover 0. All these parts are of tin, galvanized iron, or other suitable material possessing the necessary strength. The tank '1 is preferably cylindrical in shape, and the reservoir R the same, except that in one side (or more, as in Fig. 2) is formed achamher, the bottom B of the reservoir being continued, so as to close the upper end of the tank, but the wall forming the side of the reservoir being preferably curved inwardly, as shown at XV in Fig. 1. The cover 0 may have a knob or other device K, and the tank T may have handles H for obvious use.
Through the curved wall TV of the reservoir passes a drip-cock 3, whose inner end is covered by a wire screen 2, and in the bottom B of the reservoir is formed a hole he neath said drip-cock, which hole is covered with a fine wire screen 4. Depending from Serial in. seam. (N0 model.)
said bottom 13 is a tube 5, whose upper end surrounds said fine screen, and on this tube is secured a pair of deflectors, which are of funnel shape. The lowermost deflector 6 tapers upwardly, and preferably has holes 9 through its body, and the uppermost deflector 7 tapers downwardly and is preferably without the holes 9. The tank T is provided with a cook 10 for drawing off water, and at the point indicated with a cook 11 for drawing off the refined oil.
The operation of the device is as follows: The reservoir B being filled with oil and the cock 3 opened, so as to permit a fine flow therethrough, (this flow depending upon the density, of the oil,) the latter passes first through the coarse screen 2, then through the drip-cock 3 upon and through the fine screen, down through the tube 5, and out the lower end thereof. The tank T has previously been filled with water or with some other refining liquid up to about the line 8, which is below the cook 11, and, as the oil issues from the lower end of the tube 5, it passes first upwardly through the holes 9 in the lowermost deflector 6, rising through the water, than which it is of less specific gravity, until it strikes the uppermost deflector 7, whereby it is caused to pass outwardly away from the tube 5, and it finally floats upon the water, as shown. The oil can be drawn off through the cook 11 at any time desired. The water or other refining agent can be drawn off through the cook 10 after it has become foul or whenever else desired. The reservoir and tank can be filled from the top in any preferred manner. The drip-cock ,8 can be set so as to drip faster or slower, or even to permit a small stream to flow, if desired, and the reservoir R can be provided with several dripcoeks 3 and tubes 5, each arranged upon the bottom 13 and within an inwardly-curved portion of the side wall \V, the same as above described, all without departingfrom the spirit of my invention.
