WASH BOILER. No. 460,796. Patented Oct. 6, 1891.

CARL F. HAUSSLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASH-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,796, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed February 9, 1891. Serial No. 380,743- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL F. HAUSSLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ash-Boilers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in wash-boilers; and it consists of the combination of parts hereinafter described.
The figure represents a vertical section of a wash-boiler embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing, A designates a wash-boiler, near the bottom of which is a shoulder 13, whereby it may be supported on a stove, range, disc. Within the boiler is a flue 0, having a conical or flaring base or foot D, in which there are openings E, so that the boiler is in communication with the interior of the flue. Supported on the interior of the shoulder B is a perforated diaphragm E, the flue C passing through the same. At the top of the fine is secured an elevated cap F for preventing clogging of the flue, said top be ing of the form of a reversed cone G, and below said top are perforations H for the escape of hot water rising in the flue.
J designates the lid or cover of the boiler, the same being of conical form and having hinged catches K, which are adapted to engage with ears L on the side of the boiler, whereby the lid may be secured in position. At the top of the cover is an opening M, which is closed by a valve N, the latter being connected by an arm I with a lever Q, whose axis is on the standard R, rising from the cover, said lever being provided with a weight S, whereby the valve maybe adjusted to different degrees of pressure of steam within the boiler.
The operation is as follows: ater is introduced into the boiler and clothing, &c., to be washed are placed on the diaphragm, which is dishing in upward direction, whereby its strength is increased. As the water boils it rises in the flue and escapes in numerous streams through the perforations H, and returns through the clothes, &c., to the bottom of the boiler, where it re-enters the foot D and again rises in the flue, whereby there is a circulation of the water, the washing action of which on the clothes, the, is evident. Someof the boiling water will rise above the perforations H and overflow at the top G, thus causing the descent of the water in streams different from those discharged through the perforations 11. The dirt or sediment settles in the base of the boiler, and owing to the conical shape of the foot D the dirt, &c., that may drop on said foot is caused to flow down the same to the bottom thereof, so that clogging of the perforations E is prevented. Should the steam in the boiler rise to a degree which might cause an explosion, the valve N is lifted, whereby the pressure is relieved, the effect of which is evident.
Secured to the cover, at the lower edge thereof, is an inwardly-inclined rim T, which projects below the top edge of the body of the boiler, whereby the water of condensation of steam 011 the cover is directed from the same into the boiler, so that leakage at the joint of the cover and body is prevented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wash-boiler having a centrally-located tube or flue with a conical perforated bottom or foot, an upperflaring imperforate inverted conical end with an open top, and perforations in the tube below the same, a cap supported 011 said conical end above the same to leave the opening clear, and an upwardlydished perforated diaphragm surrounding the tube or flue above the conical foot thereof and separating said foot from the remainder of the boiler to provide a thorough circulation, sub stantially as described.
