LEONARD E. BENSON, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS;
wAsmoARD.
T 0 all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD E. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county (if/Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nashboards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wa-shboards for laundry use, and the object of my invention is to provide a washboard which may be readily attached or firmly fixed to atub or similar receptacle, to the end that the board may be held perfectly firm and still, permitting the operator to use both hands.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a washboard having a longer rubhing surface than usual, and to provide a washboard' which may be securely held within the tub without resting on the bottom.
A further object is to provide a Washboard which may be secured to any wash-tub, either portable or stationary, and held at the proper inclination A further object is to provide a. washboard as mentioned, which shall be trong and durable and of low cost to manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure l is a vertical section of the device en'ilmdying my invention, illustrating the same as attached to the side of a tub. Fig. is a perspective view of the board, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form.
Referring to the drawings, the washboard comprises the board, L'having the side bars, 2,-2 and a zinc rubbing surface, 3. To the under face of the board, 1, I secure a pair of substantially triangular brackets or blocks, 4 which support the board at the proper inclination in the tub. The blocks or members, 4 are each provided with means for attaching the board to the side of a tub and for securely clamping it thereto. To
.this end, I provide the clamp secured to e: -.h member and comprising a vertical portion 5 secured to the outer edge of the member, i and a llullZOlltzll oliset portion, 6

which rests upon the edge of the tub and a depending portion, 7.
The device isreadily placed upon a tub of any style and is securely clamped thereto by the thumb screws, 8 which are threaded through the portion, 7 and impinge against the side of the tub.
The board is formed without the usual legs to rest upon the bottom of the tub, the. board being supported entirely by the clamp and held at the proper inclination by the bracket members, l. However, the board is made of suificient length to reach nearly to the bottom of the tub and the zinc washing or scrubbing surface extends to the bottom of the board forming an unusually long scrubbing surface. It is obvious that as the board is held perfectly firm in the proper position in the tub, both hands are free for use.
Ipstead of forming the members, 4c, of separate blocks and securing them to the board, 1 they may be formed integrally with the side bars, 2 as illustrated in Fig. 3. Either form is strong and durable and'may be manufactured at low cost, the blocks, 4: being formed of wood and the clamps of a strip of bar iron bent into the shape shown and described.
Having described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A wash board, in combination with a pair of triangular blocks upon the back thereof and a clamp arranged upon each of said blocks, said clamp comprising a vertical portion secured to the outer edge of the block, an offset portion adapted to rest upon the top edge of a tub to support the device out of contact with the bottom thereof, adepending portion and a thumb screw threaded. through said depending ortion, substan,
tially as described.
2. A washboard having side rails in combination with'apair of solid triangular blocks secured to the back of said boart within said rails, and clamp arranged upon each of said members and adapted to supportsaid board and hold the same firmly in position, each of said clamps comprising a strip of metal consisting of a straight pornameto this specification in the presence of tion securedlto the ogitei' stigma of its respectwo subscribing Witnesses. tive triangu er inem er, ano set portion, a V w T i 1 depending portion and a thumb screw LEONARD BEL threaded through said depending portion, Witnesses: substantially as described; HOWARD S. AUSTIN,
In testimony whereof I have signed my LlLLEE Bess-um
