Description
SAMUEL G.R1cE,-orALBANY,NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No.' 90,391, dated Mag/25, 1869.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part cf the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. Riou, of the' city and county of Albany, in the State of N ew York, have invented a new and improved Vashing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makingv part of this speciication, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine coinplete, with the cover raised to expose the slattcd drum.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section, taken centrally through the machine, in the vertical plane indicated by red line a: a: i'n iig. 3.
Figure 3 is a section taken horizontally through the machine, in the plane indicated by red line y y, inr
iig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding part-s in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to employ a rotary slatted drum, which is adapted for receiving fabrics to be washed within it, and which is constructed with slats, that present rounded rubbing-surfaces to the fabrics while being washed, and flat lsurfaces to the water, and to combine with such drum a swivel compresser, which is arranged upon a central shaft in the drum, and so construct-ed that it will operate to press the fabrics outwardly against the rubbing-surfaces of the slats, and to prevent the fabrics from gathering into a ball, as will be hereinafter explained. i
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying dra-wings, A represents the wash-box, which is mounted upon legs C C, provided with a hinged cover, B, and constructed with a concave bottom.
Within this box A is a slatted drum, consisting of solio circular heads D D, and fixed slats a c', which slats are constructed with their inner edges rounded and their outer edges sharp, thus presenting dat sides to the water, for directing it forcibly toward the centre of the drum, as this drum is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrows in lig. 2.
The slats are arranged tangential to a circle described within the circumference of the heads, and, as the drum is rotated, their l'uife-edge form allows them to cut through the water freely, and direct the currents inwardly through the fabrics contained in the drum, and against the blades g of arms G, which are placed loosely upon a central shaft, E.
TheV slats a' are applied to and secured between two segments, F, which are hinged, at l1, to the heads D, and constitute a door for closing theLopening through which the fabrics are introduced into and removed fromA the drum.
lhe buttons p will keep said slatted door shut.
'lhe shaft E is arranged in the centre of the drum, and secured to its heads, and upon this shaft arms G (i are loosely placed, which areconneoted by blades y y, placed obliquely to the axis of shaft E.
The arms G, and their blades g, constitute what-.I shall denominate a compresser, which serves a twofold purpose, to wit, il; separates the fabrics in the drum, and prevents t-hem from gathering into ,a ball or roll,
and it also operates to keep the fabrics against the,
rounded rubbing-surfaces of the slats a a', during the washingl or cleansiiig-operation.
This compresser will also interrupt the currents of Y water which are forcibly directed into the drum by the Vslats a. a',and thereby assist in the cleansing-operation.
The drum 'is centrally' hung, by thc bearing h-on one side, and by a crank-shaft j, applied on the oppor site side.
The hearing h. is flanged, and reduced at its inner end, i, and secured, by its flange, tothe box A, as shown in iig. 3.
The shaft-j carries a crank, J, on' one end, and its 'ters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of a compresser, G g, loosely within a slatted drum, so as to operate substantially as described.
2. The dnble-bevelled and rounded-edge blades or slats a, arranged around a swivelling blade, g, substantially as described.
SAMUEL G. RICE.
