Description
WILLIAM II. Wittem or BLoo'MINeToN, ILLINOIS.
Leners Pawn: No. 106,296, fated .august 9, 1870..
:M PBQVEMENT IN WASINGLMACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making partei the same To all whom it may concern lBe lit known that I, WILLIAMH.' WELCH', of'
Bloomington, in the county of McLean and inthe State of'lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Washing-Machines; and
do hereby dec-lare thati'the following Vis a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, reference heing'had tothe accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon nla'kinga part of .this specilication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement ofa rotary washing-machine, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in theart to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, L will now proceedto.' describe its construction 'and operation, 'referring to the annexed drawing,` in whicbl' Figure'l is a side-elevation, part in section, of' .the entire machine; and
Figure 2 is a 'plan view, part in section, of. the rotating cylinder. v
The cylinder of my washing-nzachine'is composed of t-wo heads, connected by means of slats B B, placed a suitable distance apart, around the entire eirc'umterenceof' the heads.
On the inner sides ofthe slats B B are arranged spouts, C C, and buckets, D D, inthe'following manner: v
On one slatis placed a series of' spouts, GC, and
on the one on each Vside thereof' is a bucket, D; on
the next slat, on each side, is again a serles ofspouts, G U, and so on around the entire circumference of the cylinder. 1
The spouts on each slat' are not placed on a line, but one in advance of the other, and they are further so arranged that the spouts on every two slats face each other.' t
vThe buckets D D are also placed 1n such a manner that each 'set of' two face eachother.
As the cylinder revolves, the clothes fall onthe.'
first spout, then on -the second, series, cleaning them -very rapidly.
The spouts, as well as the buckets, being arranged and so on, of` each in the manner described, carry the water -etherway the cylinder may be turned.
The headsA A are cut off, as shown, so as to form a lid for the cylinder, which is hinged 'at-one end and fasteiiedin any suitable' manner at-the other.
vIn the center of the heads A A are pins or pivots,
Aa a, which are placed in bearings, b b, formed in the sides ofthe boiler E, and a crank, G, is passed through the sideof said boiler into one of' the pivots, a., by.
means of which the either direct-ion.
Having thus fully described myinrention,
NVhat I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letcylinder is readily revolved in 1. The cylinder A B, provided with spouts C 0,'
and buckets D D, all constructed and arranged substantially'in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination witl( a wash-boiler, the cylinder A B, spouts'G C, buckets .D D, pivots a a, bearings b b, and crank G, all constructed and arranged subv
