To all wiwm it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT A. Banana, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State. of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Packing, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to packings for bottles or other articles, said packingsc'omprising a box or case in which transverse partitions are mounted, the said artitions having perforations which receive t e bottles or other articles and revent lateral move ment of the latter in t e box or case. I

- The object of my present invention is to provide a structure having artitions or lateral supports of the genera type shown in Patent 410,496, granted September 3, 1889, to Simeon G. Curtice, but improved so as to facilitate the insertion of the partitions or lateral supports when the case is being packed.

In the patent referred to, the partitions have notc ed corners forming flan es, the

notches being rectangular ones so t at the edges of each flange are parallel. When said flan es are bent or turned, two of them up.- war and two. of them downward, the partition as a whole must be pushed into the packing casewith great care in order to revent the ed es of the flanges from bin ing a ainst the mterior walls of the box or case. If the partition gets tilted during its insertion, the edges and corners of the flanges bind so as to obstruct and materially interfere with the operation of packing.

The object ofmy invention is to provide animproved form of partition or lateral support which cannot bind when it is being inserted in the box or case even if it is tilted considerably.

To these ends my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts substantially as hereinafter descrlbed and claimed.

- id figure shows the blank employed for the upper artition in Fi s. 1 and 2, it being understood that the blan employed for the lower-partition is preferably similar excepting that two of its flaps are longer.

The sides of the box are indicated at A and B, and the top and bottom at O, the box being shown as containing bottles D, some of which in practice are inserted right end up and others inverted. .The drawings show only the inverted bottles. The arrangement of bottles will be, in practice, practically the same as in the Patent 410,496, above referred to.

The upper partition or lateral support E comprises a sheet of straw board or other suitable material the body of which is perforated to ermit the bottles to be inserted, said sheet lieing scored'or creased to form flanges e and e. In carrying out my invention, the blank or sheet E has its corners cut away as at e so as'to form beveled inclined ends of the flanges, resulting in the formation of each flange with an outer or free edge of less length than the len th of its base portion where it joins the bofy of the partition.

The beveling or cutting may be in a straightv line or more or less curved. Two of the flanges e are turned upward and the other two flanges e are turned downward. The lower artition or lateral support F also has four anges, two of which are turned upward as at f to meet the down turned flanges e of the partition E, the other two flanges f of thepartition F being turned downward torest" on the bottom of the box. In Figs.'1 and 2 I have indicated that the flanges f are also beveled or inclined as at but do not limit myself to a structure aving two partitions the flanges of both of which are beveled or inclined. Since the lower partition'is inserted in the box before any bottles are laced therein, it is easier to manipulate sai 1partition when locating it, and it may not a ways be necessary to bevel the edges of the flanges of the lower part-ition.

As indicated in the drawing the relative lengths of the flanges e',({ are such that they meet in aplane consi erably above the mid depth of the box, this proportion being practically the same as in the atent above referred to. But it is to be on erstood'that I do not limit myself to the relative lengths of the flanges since they may be so proportioned as to meet at any pomt between the two partitions. It will be understood of course, that the flanges e and f are employed-to (prevent the partitions from shift-- mg towar each other, while the fla s e and f preserve the partitions at the desired distances from the top and bottom of the box.

It will not ,be understood that owing to the bevelin or inclination of the ends of the flan es as s own in Fig. 3, when said flanges are ent in opposite directions so as to stand perpendicular to the body of the partition and the partition is to be inserted in the box, the ends of said flanges can not bite into 01' bind against the inner surfaces of the sides of the box even if the partition is considerably tilted out of a plane parallel with the top of the box. This is because each flange is what may be termed tapering, since its outer or free edge is of less length than its base or line of junction with the body or horizontal portion of the partition.
