Niirnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT B. PRATT, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
CARTON OR SHIPPING-PACKAGE FOR PISTON-PACKINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,250, dated September 4, 1900.
Application filed March 21, 1900. Serial No. 9,596. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. PRATT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Carton 01' Shipping-Package for Pis ton Packings,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a carton or package for shipping packing of the character known to the trade as spiral or ring packing, although it is capable of use in connection with any kind of packing and with other articles of merchandise, if desired.
One object of this invention is the provision of a carton or package designed to facilitate the withdrawal of its contents from the case without disturbing the order or arrangement of the same, whereby access may be had to the packin g for removing one of the rings or for cutting off a length from a spiral packing.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the course of the subjoined description, and the novelty in the combination and construction of parts will be defined by the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a carton or package constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the packingholder removed from its inolosing case.
The same numerals of reference are used to designate corresponding parts in each fig ure of the drawings.
The carton or package of my invention contemplates the employment of the case 5, having a removable cover 6. The important element of my improved carton consists of a holder which is adapted to contain the spiral or ring packing, said holder being readily insertible in the case after it shall have been loaded or filled with the packing and in like manner is easily withdrawable, together with its contents, from the case, whereby the operator may obtain access to the packing for the purpose of removing one of the rings or of cutting a length from a spiral packing, such operations of removing a ring or cutting off a length of the spiral packing being eliected without disturbing the remaining rings on the holderor the length of the spiral packing thereon.
The improved holder which I have invented consists, essentially, of a stem 7, a base 8, and a finger-hold 9. These parts may be made in a single piece of wood, metal, or other appropriate material, or the parts may be made in separate pieces and suitably united together. The form or shape of the holder and the style of the finger-hold are not material; but in the embodimentof the invention shown in the drawings I prefer to make the stem cylindrical in form, the base of angular shape, and to employ a perforated plate, as the finger-hold 9. The case 5 is of generally-rectangular form, so as to resemble ordinary packing boxes or cartons, and the base 8 of the holder is of a size to fit snugly within the base for the purpose of preventing the holder from turning around within the case after it shall have been inserted therein. The stem of the holder exceeds the height of the box when the cover is removed therefrom, so that the upper part of the stem or the finger-hold 9 will protrude above the top edge of the case, assuming that the cover is removed, whereby the operator is able to readily thrust a finger into the perforated plate or finger-hold for the purpose of easily Withdrawing the entire holder and its contents from the case 5.
In Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings the holder of my invention is shown as having a spiral packing wrapped or coiled around the stem 7, so that the lower edge of the packing rests upon the base of the holder. This base thus prevents displacement of the packing on the holder and insures its withdrawal with said holder when the latter is lifted out of the case, whereby the base 8 performs a twofold purpose first, it prevents the holder from turning in the case, and, secondly, it insures the withdrawal of the packing with the holder from the case. \Vhen the holder, with its load, is removed from the case by pulling the holder endwise therefrom, the base may be placed on the table or other surface, and the packing is thus exposed to the view of the operator, who is able to measure off a length of packing and cut the same without removing the packing from the stem of the holder, thereby avoiding the disarrangement of the flexible and spiral packing. The holder and the length of the packing remaining on the stem may then be replaced in the case and the cover 6 reapplied.
Although I have shown my improved holder as equipped with a spiral packing, it is evident that the improved carton may be used in connection with ring packings. In this event the holder may be withdrawn partially or wholly from the case, one of the packing-rings removed from the stem without disarrangin g the other packing-rin gs, and the holder and the cover may then be replaced. It is also evident that the improved holder and the entire carton may be used in connection with other articles, and I do not therefore desire to strictly confine myself to the use of the improved carton in connection with the spiral article of commerce herein specified.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is-- 1. A carton substantially such as described, comprising a case having a removable cover, and a hollow holder provided at the lower end of its stem with an enlarged base, and at the upper end of said stem with a centrallyapertured plate constituting a finger-hold, said base fitting snugly within the case to restrain the holder from turning therein, and the entire holder with its load being readily withdrawn from the case, as set forth.
2. A carton of the character described comprising a case having an angular cross-sectional contour, a removable cover for the case, and a hollow cylindrical holder provided at its lower end with an enlarged angular base fitting snugly within the case to restrain the holder from turning therein, and provided at its top with a centrally-apertured plate constituting a finger-hold by means of which the holder may be removed from the case.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
