UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
PATRICK D. SKAHEN, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK ROU' G-H BOX FOR BURIAL-CASKETS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK D. SKAI-IEN, citizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rough Boxes for Burial- Caskets, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the species of rough-boxes which are formed of sheet metal, and are designed to inclose burialcaskets.
The object of my present invention is to provide the box with a lid which shall be more securely seated upon the box and at the same time serve to brace the top of the box so as to prevent its being crushed or sprung inwardly by the pressure of the earth on the outer sides of the box when buried. And the object also is to provide the said lid with a muffler of any suitable material applied to the top of the lid and isolated from the interior of the box. And the object furthermore is to effectually brace the lid so as to prevent its springing downward and to safely sustain the weight of the earth deposited upon it when buried. And to that end the invention consists in the improved construction of the lid as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a transverse section of the upper portion of a rough-box or casketinclosing box embodying my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sectional views illustrating modifications of my invention.
-AA represent the side walls of the rough-box which are composed of sheet metal and are formed with outwardly projecting horizontal ledges (oaon their tops, and B represents one of the endwalls thereof, which latter walls are formed with like ledges (not necessary to be shown).
C represents the lid which is composed of a single sheet metal plate. Said lid is formed with upwardly projecting.
walls a a which engage the inner faces of the walls of the box. Extending outwardly from said walls a a of the lid are horizontal flanges --Z which are seated upon the horizontal ledges aa of the box and which terminate with downwardly projecting ribs Z b embracing the edges of said ledges.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 15, 1903.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908 Serial No. 185,280 1 l By reason of the upwardly projecting walls of the lid engaging the inner faces of the walls of the box and the ribs b -b embracing the ledges, as stated, the walls of the box are rigidly braced so as to enable them to effectually resist the inward pres sure of the earth filling the grave, and at the same time the lid is effectually prevented from shifting laterally and longitudinally.
-c denotes a mufller formed of wood, cement or other suitable material which is incapable of transmitting sound. This muffler is seated upon the top of the lid and is formed with shoulders (Z(Z abutting against the aforesaid walls a a of said lid. The portion of said lid between the walls of the box may be formed flat as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, or crowning as shown in Fig. 3. In some cases I prefer to form the said muffler e with horizontal marginal plates -c -c which are seated on the flanges -bbof the lid and are firmly secured thereto by means of either rivets or screws e --e passing through the plates and flanges as shown in Fig. 2. The said muflicr may be formed in one piece of wood as represented in Figs. 2 and 3, or of cement or similar material as shown in Fig. 1. lVith this latter material for the construction of the muffler, I prefer to employ a shield fplaced over the muffler and which spans the lid to serve as a truss for strengthening the lid and prevent ing it from being bent by the weight of the earth cast upon it when buried. In this instance, the shield is formed with horizontal marginal portions 00 seated upon the flanges Z)-b of the lid and secured thereto by means of the aforesaid rivets or screws c -e IV hat I claim is 1. The combination with a box; of a lid composed of a single sheet metal plate formed with upwardly projecting walls bracing the inner faces of the walls of the box, and with horizontal flanges extending outwardly from the upwardly projecting walls and seated upon the upper faces of the box, and a solid crowning mutiier permanently seated upon the lid and abutting against the walls of the lid, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with a box; of a lid composed of a single sheet-metal plate and having upwardly projecting walls bracing the inner faces of the walls of the box, and
horizontal flanges extending outwardly from the upwardly projecting walls and seated on the horizontal edges of the box, and a mufller resting upon the central portion of the lid and having a convex top surface, and a shield composed of a single sheet-metal plate spanning the muffler and having its marginal portion secured to the marginal portion of the lid, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a box provided with horizontal ledges on the tops of its walls, of a lid composed of a single sheet metal plate formed with upwardly projecting walls bracing the inner faces of the walls of the box andwith horizontal flanges extending outwardly from the upwardly projecting walls and seated upon the horizontal ledges of the box, a muflier seated upon the lid and abutting against the walls thereof, and a shield spanning the muffler and fastened to the lid as set forth.
