JAOOB Il. FORSHAY, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN BURIAL-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,536, (lated June 2, 1874; application filed April 1s, ism.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that`I, JACOB H. FORSHAY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Burial-Oase, of I which the followin g is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a top view of my improved burial-case, with parts ta-ken ott' to show construction; Fig. 2, a sectional side elevation; Fig'. 3, a vertical transverse section ofthe same on the line e e, Fig. 2, and Figs. et and 5 are detail views ofthe fasteningclamps for attaching the cover a-nd glass-protecting lids.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding' parts.
rl"he objectot' my invention is to produce an improved burial-ease, which may be readily opened and closed, and hermetically scaled 'without the use ot' i'astening-screws or cement, fthe cover be appliedn in a quicker and easier manner, allowing' the rearranging' of the body after transportation without the loss ottime incident to the removing ot' the cement and the resealing' of the cover. The invention consists in combining a suitably-recessed glass-protecting lid with a iianged base-piece, `wedge-sha-ped lug, and fastening' -clam p, as hereinafter more fully described.
ln the drawing', A represents the body, and B the cover, ot' my burial-case, which is constructed in any size, shape, and finish, and ol" any suitable material, by preference, cast of zinc, or similar metal.
rlhe connection otbody and cover of the case l interni to make entirely without the use ot' screws and cement, as the same are objectionable not only by consuming' more time in putting on the lid, and dropping the superliuous cement on the licor, but mainly by the inconvenience of quickly takin g' oi' and resealing the lid for the purpose ot' arranging the body when the saine has become disarranged by transportation or otherwise. The last view ot' the deceased is frequently denied to the friends on account ot the delay and trouble incident to the remo Ival of the lid.
By my mode of fastening, the lid may be applied and taken ott' in a few minutes without ditiiculty, the connection being made by tastening-clamps O, which are provided with tapering grooves or recesses c, and placed over the dovetailed wedge-strips b at the sides and ends ot' the body and cover of the case. lThe adjoining parts of body A and cover B are provided with interlocking grooves and tooth shaped projections d, which eX- tend around the whole circumference of the case, and have, at the lowest or highest points of the grooves, rectangular extension-recesses, into which corresponding continuous strips c, of rubber or similar lining, are wedged, glued, or otherwise applied.
By placing' the cover on the body of the case, it is evident that the apexes of the projections embed themselves tightly into the rubber lining', and form thereby a perfect and hermetically-sealing joint as soon as the fastening-clamps are applied, a threefold connection being obtained by arranging the body with two projections and one intermediate groove, and the top with corresponding grooves and projections, as shown in Fig. 3.
The glass pla-tes ot' cover B are set into the same in the customary manner, and the arched protecting' lids D fastened on the same by recesses j' at their outer ends, and lateral recesses g at the inner ends. The outer recess j" wise ot' 'llange g. Lugf has a wedge-shaped projection, over which a similarlyrecessed clamp, E', of suitable symbolic ornamentation is placed, it being ot' larger size than lug' j" and recess j", so as to project over the lid and bind the same tirmly in position between brace-piece B and the lug.
A tight] y-ittin g and readily-applied fastening` ot' the cover and glass-protecting lids is thus obtained, and a more convenient and useful burial-case. produced.
Having' thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-` Y The combination of a glass lid, D, having end recesses j' g, with iianged base-piece B, wedge-shaped lugf, and clamp E, as and for the purpose speeilied.
