Description

Witness es:
Inventor: MMD@ UNITED STATES PATEN FFICEW FREDERICK A. LANE, OF SWANZEY, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND LUTHER S. LANE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED STUFFINGr FOR MATTRESSES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 90,368, dated May 25, 1869.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. LANE, of Swanzey, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented or produced a new and Improved Stuffing for Mattresses; and I do hereby declare that the followingisafull and exact description thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a new and improved article of manufacture from woolen bers, from refuse woolen goods, rags, &c., to be applied for stuffing purposes of all kinds, by bunching or curling it up, which prevents the same from matting down, thus giving the required amount of elasticity to the article stuffed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction, how prepared and applied.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a mattress with parts removed, showing the application of my improved article of manufacture.
The woolen fibers to be curled or bunched are made from refuse woolen goods, old stockings, rags, druggets, &c., after they have passed through the different kinds of machinery, which prepare the same into what is termed shoddy This mass of woolen fibers is then passed through `what is termed a duster,7 which completely removes the dust and dirt from the same. When it is to be used l for the sole purpose of making cloth, this mass of woolen fibers is passed through the duster very fast, in order to prevent the same from curling or bunching up in the least, as, in
case these bers become bunched or curled in the least, it shortens the staple, damaging the same, and making it much harder to work. 1n preparing this mass of woolen bers for my use and bringing it to my improved new state, it is passed through this same duster at a much slower rate until the bers are curled and bunched as desired, as the more curl and bunching it has the better the article produced, giving the same more elasticity. These bers, being thus curled and hunched, are then ready to be applied for stuffing purposes of all kinds, the bunching and curling of these woolen fibers serving for the same purpose as the curl and crisp to hair, giving the article stuffed the required elasticity, preventing it from matting, and when the weight is removed from the same the article stuffed will resume its former and finished position. Thus I am enabled to produce an article that can be used and applied for stuffing purposes, which is nearly equal in quality and durability to curled hair, and can be furnished at a much cheaper rate, and will supply the wants of the public, and that will come within the reach of every one.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture for stuffing purposes, woolen fiber ina-de from the refuse of woolen goods, rags, &c., by bunching and curling, as described.
