PIERRE OUTTINO MELLICHAMP, OF EDGEFIELU, SOUTH CAROLINA.
SASH-FASTENER;
Specification .of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
Application fil'ed March 26, 1908. Serial No. 428,458.
To all whom it"may concern:
Be it known that I, PIERRE CUTTINo MEL- L'ICHAMP, a citizen of the United States, re-
- siding at Edgefield, in the county of Edgefield and State of South Carolina, have 1nvented certain new and useful Im rovements 1n Sash-Fasteners; and I do .dec are the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable otiiers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this spcification.
My invention relates to sash fasteners and has for 1ts 0biect to provide a fastener which can be quick y and easily applied to a Window frame and which will securely and eifectually look a window sash against surreptitious openings. With this object in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the sash fastener and in the construction of the pivoted cam shaped sash entener.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in I which: I
1 indicates the sash fastener which comprises the base 2, casing 3, pivoted cam shaped foot 4, slidable but non-rotatable bolt 5 and threadedstem 6, said stem having a threaded portion 7 and a reduced portion 8. The casing 3 is provided with a longitudinal recess 9 rectangular in cross section as shown in Fig. 3 to accommodate the slidable bolt 5, and the casing is provided with a reduced bore or opening 10 circular in cross section to accommodate the reduced portion 8 of the stem 6 as shown in Fig. 2.
11 indicates a thumb nut within which the stem 6 enters and to which the said thumb nut 11 is securely fastened.
As shown in Fig. 2 the movable bolt 5 is internally threaded to receive the threaded portion 7 of the stem 6, while the outer end rovide a sto of said bolt 5 is bifurcated to receive the pivoted foot 4.
Referring to the pivoted foot 4 it will be seen that the same is eccentrically pivoted at 12 within the bifurcated portion of the bolt 5 in such manner that the said foot is cam shaped. On the periphery of the foot 4 I 13 arranged to engage the olt 5 when t e foot is in osition shown in Fig. 2. The foot 4.normal y balances in osition shown in Fig. 1, and I provide the or ward portion of its peri hery with a strip 14 of soft yielding materia or the like, while the lower portion of its peritphery is serrated or provided with a series 0 teeth 15, the distance between the teeth 15 and the pivot 12 being greater than the distance between the outer surface of the yielding stri 14 and the pivot 12.
Having t ius fully described the several parts of my invention its operation is as follows: When it is desired to lock the window sash the thumb nut is turned, which operation tends to unthread the stem 6 from the bolt 5, thus forcing said bolt out of its casing 3 carrying the pivoted foot 4 into engagement with the sash 16 as shown in Fig. 1;
and it will be seen thatin this position the yielding strip 14 engages the sash 16, thus the sash is held securely without being scarred or scratched. When, however, it is attempted to raise the sash while the fastener is in engagement therewith the pivoted cam shaped foot 4 rotates into position shown in Fig. 2 causing the teeth or serrations 15 to bite into the sash and securely lock the same, further rotation of the foot being prevented by the stop 13.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is,
1. A sash fastener comprising a base, a slidable but non-rotatable bolt carried in said base, said bolt being internally threaded, a threaded stem for said bolt arranged in said base, said bolt having its outer end bifurcated, a cam sha ed foot pivoted in the bifurcated end of sai bolt, said cam shaped foot being provided with a series of teeth or 105 serrations on a portion of its periphery and with a strip of yielding material on a ortion of its periphery adjacent said toothe or serrated portion and a stop on the periphery of said cam shaped foot, the whole being arranged as described whereby when force into engagement with a sash the said strip such as rubber, felt in contact with the sash, andupon upward movement of the said sash the toothed'or serrated portion of the said foot is brought into enga ement with the said sash, substantially as es'cribed.
2. A window fastener comprising a base, a
slidable but non-rotatable bolt carried on said base, a stem in engagement with said bolt for actuating the same, said bolt havi a bifurcated end, a cam sha ed foot pivote in said bifurcated end and aving a portion of its periphery toothed or serrated, and a stop on said foot for limiting the rotation Y thereof, the Whole arranged as described whereby upon'upward movement of a sash the said foot is rotated to bring the said toothed or serrated portion of said foot into engagement with the sash substantially as descrlbed. 1
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signa ture, in presence of two witnesses.
