To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES F. KoHL- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New- York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Hand-Bags, of which the following is aspecification.

This invention relates to fastening devices for hand bags, and has for its object to provide means for holding the fastening devices of the bag against an unfastening movement except when the handle is turned down and out of the bag carrying position; and also relates to means for moving the fastening devices into a fastening position upon the movement of the handle from an idle into a bag carrying position.

Frequently hand bags are opened while in use, as for instance a person will be carrying a bag by the arm being placed through the handle and in a crowd the bag will be opened and the contents removed; but by this present improvement the fastening devices will be locked against being moved to an unfastening position except when the handle is turned into an idle position.

The illustrated form of the invention is embodied in a hand bag provided with a number of fasteners which will be held locked in their fastening position and can only be unfastened upon being unlocked by the turning down of the handle into an idle position. Means are provided in association with similarly formed fasteners for returning these from an unfastened to a fastened position upon the raising of the handle from its idle position, but the fasteners will not be unfastened by the handle being turned into its idle position, but will only be unlocked by such movement.

In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification the Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion 'of a hand bag showing it provided with a form of my invention, the bag in this illustration being shown open. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same parts showing the bag closed, however, and the handle in an idle position; and Fig. 3 is a detail of some of the parts in the said view in side elevation.

The hand bag, designated in a general way by 10, is shown as having frame side members 11 which are fastened to the bag and pivoted together in the well known manner and to one of which frame members will be pivoted a handle 12 which may be raised up'into an operative or bag carrying position, or may be turned down into an idle position.

In the present illustration a pair of standards 13 are fastened to one of the frame members and the ends of the handle are provided with stub shafts 14. which are fast with the handle and mount-ed in said standards. There is also fast with each end of the handle a plate 15 shown in the form of a disk. Each of these plates in the present instance is located between the standard 13 and an upstanding portion 16 of the frame so that lateral movement will not be permitted. This plate is also fast with the handle and is caused to turn therewith. The side of the frame carrying the handle is provided with a housing portion 17 for a lock or fastener, and the other side of the frame is provided with a catch 18 which will engage a mating catch 19 in the housing. This mating catch 19 is carried by a bar 20, one end of which passes through a hanger 21, carried by the housing, and is guided thereby. The other end is supported by a hanger 22. The hanger 22 surrounds the bar and will act as an abutment for a spring 23 for drawing the bar into the fastening position. This will permit the catch 18 to be snapped into the mating catch 19, and upon the movement of the bar against the influence of the spring will permit the catch to be unfastened. The bar 20 is shown as provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 123 through which projects an arm 24: of a bolt 25. The arm 24: projects out through the top of the housing and is engaged by a slide 26. By means of this slide and arm the bar 20 may be moved longitudinally for releasing the catch 18. The bolt 25 is shown passing out through the upstanding portion 16 of the frame, and when the handle and its disks 15 are in a position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 the end of the bolt 25 will pass through an opening 27 in the disk 15 and the catch may be unfastened. But when the handle is in a raised or bag carrying position the bolts 25 cannot be moved since the disk 15 is in the path of its movement. The longitudinal slot 123 will, however, permit an independent movement of the bar 20 for permitting the engagement of the catch 18 with the catch 19.

Each of the stub Shafts is shown as carrying a cam 32 which is so constructed that when the handle is in the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 the fastening members 30 may be moved upon their pivots, but when the handle is in a bag car rying position they cannot be so moved. The cams are of such construction that when the fastenings 30 are in an unfastening position and the handle is moved from its idle to its bag carrying position, the cams will move the fasteners 30 into their fastening It will be seen, however, that the movement of the handle from its bag carrying position to its idle position does not unfasten any of these fasteners, but only unlocks the same.

In Fig. 3 the dotted line position of the cam and of the handle shows this in its raised or bag carrying position; and the full line position of the cam shows the position into which it will be moved when the handle is turned to an idle position. 2

Having described my invention I claim: The combination with a hand-bag having a handle adapted for turning down from its bag carrying position, a of a catch for holding the bag closed, a reciprocatory slide 3 for releasing the catch, a bolt movable by the slide in its releasing excursion, a plate fast with the handle and provided with an opening for the passage of said bolt when the handle is turned down from its bag 3 carrying position for permitting the release ing excursion of the slide. 7
